Hal Yamashita was a beautiful, serene place to take our friends out to dinner for my husband's birthday. It wasn't too loud that we couldn't talk. The food was terrific. We ordered an assortment of items to check out the quality of the food. Our friend who travels to Japan regularly indicated that the food was as good as he gets when in Japan.

This review is for their take out. I had been wanting to try this place so badly and finally went for it. I ordered edamame and a simple spicy tuna roll. There must have been about a pound of edamame. It was grilled and had a nice smoky flavor which was interesting. The sushi was great - not too saucy and had a healthy serving of ginger. I really want to dine in! They have a nice area inside with seating at a sushi bar as well. The omakase looks amazing too.

Hal Yamashita was amazing. The quality of the fish was unlike any other restaurant in Napa. Much better than Morimoto and the price is reasonable! Service was outstanding. We will definitely be back!

Authentic and high quality. From the Otoro, Chirashi, Truffle grilled edamame, and event the matcha ice cream! Staff were excellent too. We will be returning here as our go to place for food.

The food was good but the time it took to get our dinner to our table took way too long considering there were only 4 other tables with 2-3 people per table. Can't go wrong with Hamachi Kama.

Excellent Japanese fusion dishes. Top notch ingredients. Although I prefer traditional sushi, this is a great Japanese restaurant in the area.Service is good for that busy Labor Day evening with limited staff. All raw fishes we had were excellent. Best ikura I had outside Japan.Tempura was just ok. It’s in the set. Otherwise I wouldn’t order. If I go again, I will order raw fish dishes only. I feel that’s what they do best.

One of the best restaurants in the Napa area and one of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever been to. Most of the fish is flown in from Japan and the owner goes to great lengths to ensure its freshness. My husband and I shared the kombu cured amberjack special and hamachi carpaccio with pickled jalapeño to start - both phenomenal. We then had king salmon, tuna, and yellowtail nigiri which was all so good, we doubled back on our order. Their miso marinated cod with Parmesan and bottarga was a unique take on the classic making it even better. Who knew Parmesan and miso make a great combo? I also want to mention how lovely the entire staff is as well as the atmosphere. If we didn’t live in NJ, we’d come here weekly, so I hope everyone reading this frequents this place on our behalf!

I had really high hopes for this restaurant, it's a lovely modern setting and hostess/wait staff were super friendly. Only 1 of our 4 dishes was elevated (the cappaccio), the rest were very mediocre, unfortunately. The wait between the dishes was painfully slow...it made us kind of annoyed by the time our last dish came out. I was so hopeful about the food, it's relatively pricey - which is fine, if you can deliver. Sorry :(

My wife wanted to try this restaurant after seeing it listed in "Napa Valley Restaurants". We walked in and was greeted by warm and friendly staff. We ordered a few beers and some sushi rolls and, wow, the flavor was so good and it was clear the fish was of outstanding quality. The service was also very good. Conner was our waiter, but Stephanie also checked in and both were outstanding. Service is made great by the little things, like "pardon my reach" and checking in regularly and politely. Did I mention the sushi? So good!

So much invested here, so much potential. Good it is, but falls short. The owner obviously had a terrific dream. What happened to the execution? I hope people will go and try it. This should be and could be a true destination in Napa. I fear that it will soon be a clothing store...

Can't really rate the food, because we left after sitting at our table in a mostly empty restaurant for over 20 minutes without a single person coming to talk to us to or even make eye contact. We tried twice to catch someone's attention as they walked by our table, but to no avail. It was honestly the strangest experience I've had in a restaurant in a very long time.

What can I say? Being a total foodie, going to Hal Yamashita’s downtown Napa Restaurant is like a pilgrimage...The Wagyu & Chawana Mushi prepared by Chef Demetrio and the Sushi prepared by Chef Takuya was – EXCEPTIONAL. I'm happy to report this restaurant lives up to the chef's name and the ambiance was so special.I was greeted by Michiyo who made sure our evening and every plate that came out was perfect. Michiyo and our server Ziva were kind enough to explain the entire menu to us before we ordered and made sure each dish that came out was top notch.I've never eaten a dish with, basically, a putty knife tool, but the Uni- Maki and Black Cod were literally the best things I believe I've ever eaten. Trust me – BOTH are a MUST have order. We had some beautiful Hamachi and toro that literally melted like butter in our mouth and the Wagyu was an out of this world treat. We paired each of the courses with wine and sparkling and I look forward to some of their winemaker dinners that are coming up!An incredible evening …..can’t wait to go back.

All the reviews are correct, the food is amazing but the service was not great. My family and I celebrated my birthday here and while I enjoyed the food, the service was exhaustingly slow. I can understand if the restaurant was busy but we were seated at the bar and there was only two other parties other than us. Seated at the bar, we were able to watch the chef prepare our food (which was really neat) but we were also able to see our food sitting there just waiting to be delivered to us. The waitress never brought the edamame we had ordered or the beer my brother had ordered. She also over poured the first two pours of our bottle and when she ran out with clearly not enough for our third member sharing the bottle, she proceeded to tell us someone was going to have to share which I found to be incredibly unprofessional. Great food but experience wasn't as good as it could've been.
