Definitely one of the best in SD!

I finally got to try this spot, and the ice cream was really good, but I was hoping to be able to walk into the store and admire its classic vibe. I didn't know they had a type of kiosk thing at the entrance, and pretty much that's where you order and wait for your ice cream. Still, everything was fine. I'm glad I got to try it after living in National City for 23 years.

The worst customer service. My wife ordered a pistachio ice cream and a strawberry milkshake. The lady serving, I imagine she is the owner of the place, served us two milkshakes, one pistachio and one strawberry. I tried to tell her that she was wrong, that it was one pistachio ice cream and not milkshake.

The lady arrogantly answered that my wife had ordered two malted milks and refused to make any changes to the order.

I did not want to argue with a close minded old person and paid her, obviously without a tip, and in front of her I threw away the milkshake that I had not asked for and that the owner refused to accept.

I will never return to that place where they do not respect the customer.

Some of the best ice cream in San Diego county. Lady that helped us was a bit cranky, actually very snappy. I asked for a scoop of cinnamon, and she crankily snapped back that they were out. Ok...chill lady, I'll take cherry, don't get all bent out of shape that I asked for a flavor that you were out of. I'm sorry, I left my mind reading abilities at home today. The ice cream is so dang good, I will put up with Cruella.

Great ice cream, we like this historical spot. Unfortunately the staff is always grumpy and just not as friendly as I’d hope. It’s also kind of weird they block the front door with a makeshift counter so you can’t even go in and enjoy the quaint shop. The attitude and blocked door diminish its charm, but the ice cream is good.

A little bit dated review. 60 years ago, friends and I would walk from our neighborhood on T Avenue (long since buried under I 805) to Niederfranks on A Avenue. Just for a cone. Great memories

Niederfrank's is a National City Institute. It has been business for years. It mainly sells ice cream but does have limited pies. The ice cream is made locally (I think in the back of the store). The ice cream is very smooth and creamy because of the ingredients they use. They have a large selection of flavors, like Pineapple Mango, Salted Caramel, Strawberry Cheesecake, Cookie Dough, Chocolate, Vanilla, Golden Pistachios, and the list goes on and on. I think they have 50 or more flavors. They have malts, shakes, and Sundays and will make them using any flavor you choose. It is a small store front with no seating inside . There are a couple of tables outside in front. The employees are very friendly and will provide taste samples if asked. Prices are good.I always get 4 or 5 half gallons when I stop by. The ice cream holds up great in the freezer at home. There are some restaurants next door or within a block of Niederfrank's. Parking can be an issue as there isn't a parking lot. The street parking can fill up due to the other businesses in the area.I recommend this place.

Parking: Street parking that can fill up quickly due to other businesses on the street. Limited handicap spaces are available.

I'm not a fan of their ice cream, but many are! Indoor seating has been removed, only outdoor is now available, and limited.

One of the best ice cream places i have tried so far in San Diego. There are so many flavors to pick from. The ones we ordered tasted very fresh and so yummy. (We got strawberry and rum raisin) They weren’t overly sweet like most ice cream places are.I can see why some reviews were complaining about the price. I ordered a single scoop of ice cream in the cup. comparing to how much ice cream you normally would get from other places, it is a smaller portion. HOWEVER I personally don’t want to eat a huge amount of ice cream at once and I do appreciate the smaller portion with better quality ingredients. So it works out perfectly for me. :) My husband ordered one scoop in a waffle cone and his portion of ice cream looks more than mine in the cup. So if you want more ice cream, maybe get them in a waffle cone instead of a cup.I highly recommend this place if you like homemade, fresh, and tasty ice-creams. I can’t wait to come back and try other flavors next time!!

This is a great little spot. It's an ice cream parlor with some delicious and unique flavors. We took my dad for his favorite (liquorice) because we can't get it anywhere else. The ingredients are clearly high quality and the variety is impressive. I had a blackberry vanilla and it was wonderful. Definitely check it out if you're in the area
