JW Hayes BBQ Reviews
The best bbq in the OC...
Two years ago we started our Annual Veterans BBQ. JW Hayes has been both years.
We are never disappointed. And nobody goes home hungry. The man knows how to put fire to meat.
Fantastic smoke BBQ. I’m looking forward to having more!

JW Hayes BBQ is a hidden gem for Texas-style barbecue located inside a liquor store near the John Wayne International Airport. Despite its small size and casual setup, the place offers delicious and satisfying BBQ that appeals to those craving authentic flavors. The menu is simple but diverse, featuring items like brisket, pork ribs, and deviled eggs, all prepared with care. The brisket is often praised for being super tender, juicy, and soft enough to cut with a fork, though some find it less juicy and of lower beef quality, especially when compared to Texas standards. Ribs are flavorful with a nice grilled taste and are easy to pull off the bone, while the deviled eggs and coleslaw add extra flavor to the meal. The BBQ sauce has a unique profile, sometimes with a berry hint, and complements the dishes well.
Service is friendly and helpful, with staff taking extra steps to accommodate customers, such as wrapping BBQ tightly for motorcycle riders. Outside seating with plastic tables and chairs is available, providing a casual spot to enjoy the food. The atmosphere earns a high rating for its thoughtful setup and the fact that it operates within a liquor store environment, creating a unique and unexpected dining experience. Prices are considered high by some, with $40/lb for brisket, but the quality and flavor make it worthwhile for many. Overall, JW Hayes BBQ is praised for delivering what many consider the best BBQ between Irvine and Costa Mesa, with some comparing it favorably to Texas offerings and noting it as a rare, quality find in California.
