I was disappointed by the service at this establishment. From the moment we walked in, the overall vibe felt off. The owner was rude, staring at us in a way that made us uncomfortable, and seemed annoyed that we were simply trying to clean up after ourselves, insisting we leave our trash on the table. As a business owner, a more welcoming demeanor and basic customer courtesy would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, the poor service overshadowed the experience.

“You Stay Too Long!!”

My wife, two daughters, and I were visiting Newport Beach and decided to try Ohana Sushi & Ramen. What we hoped would be a pleasant dinner turned into one of the most disappointing—and frankly insulting—dining experiences we’ve had.

We were greeted by a young gentleman who was very kind and welcoming. He handed us menus and seated us at an outdoor table facing Balboa Blvd. After a long wait, he came back to inform us we needed to place our order inside at the counter. That was our first hint something was off.

We ordered a mix of appetizers, specialty rolls, a soup, a poki bowl, and drinks—just under $145 total with tip. But when the food arrived, the presentation was shockingly low-effort: paper water cups, paper boats, soup in a paper cup, plastic utensils, and wooden chopsticks. All this at fine dining prices. Our table, while wiped down, felt sticky. The bathroom? No toilet paper.

The food tasted fine, but portions were noticeably small compared to standard sushi places—again, not in line with the pricing.

Then came a serious issue: my wife, who is severely allergic to shrimp, discovered tempura shrimp in the Fire Crunch Roll. The menu made no mention of shrimp. I calmly brought it to the counter and asked the young man to confirm. He did. The older sushi chef overheard and abruptly interjected that the tempura shrimp was the “cracker” part of the roll. When I pointed out that shrimp was not listed in the ingredients and told him about my wife’s allergy, he snapped, “What about the Dragon Roll?” I said that was for my daughter, who isn’t allergic.

I politely asked if he could remake the roll without shrimp. He replied, “I make it, but you pay for new roll.” No concern for the allergy. No apology. Just more money. Wanting my wife to have something to eat, I agreed—another $17.24 out of pocket.

We still tried to enjoy our time together and had some great family conversation. I even bussed our own table to keep the area tidy.

Then, at 8:10 PM—after 1 hour and 40 minutes of dining—the chef stepped out to the entrance, looked at me, and snapped, “You order more?” I said, “No thanks, we’re good.” He immediately barked, “You stay too long,” and waved for us to leave.

I responded, “The $162 I spent doesn’t permit us to sit and have dinner and conversation?” He stormed back inside, shaking his head. The restaurant was not full—only three other tables were occupied—and they were closing in 50 minutes. It felt like a deliberate and rude dismissal.

As we got up to leave, another customer who witnessed the scene said, “That is totally ridiculous!” We couldn’t agree more.

This place charges high prices, offers fast food-level presentation, has poor allergy transparency, and worst of all—treats customers with blatant disrespect.

We will not be returning. Spend your money somewhere that values customers—and basic courtesy. Zero stars!!

Sushi was good, but the broth in the Chicken Ramen did not taste that good. I mentioned it, but they didn't care.
Service was mediocre and honestly I don't care to come back.

Fantastic poke bowl, delicious! Walked 8 miles to get here while my vehicle was in the shop, worth every step! Now I have the energy to walk back!

My family of 5 dined here while in town and everyone was happy! Sushi, ramen and calamari were all delicious. Chef and his wife were super kind people. Hope to get back in again before we head home.

*WARNING* FOOD POISONING
*WARNING* NOT A VETERAN FRIENDLY ESTABLISHMENT
Food should be no star
Service no star
Atmosphere 1 star
THE ONLY RUDE PERSON WAS THE OWNER AND THE WIFE. LOOK AT THE VIDEO. YOU WILL SEE ITS HER THE OWNER NOT THE CUSTOMERS PAYING ALMOST A HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR RAMEN AND A POKE BOWL. YES. THAT OVER PRICED . AND LOCATED WHERE YOU ARE YOUR FOOD SHOULD BE TOP NUMBER ONE 100% ALL THE TIME

1. Out dated inside and out
2. Absolutely zero customer service. No greet or any direction.
3. SELF SERVE BUT YOU GET A TIP FEE ON YOUR BILL.
4. FOOD IS WAY TO EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT THEY ARE SERVING. THERE IS NO ASSORTED FISH ON ANYTHING. NACHOS NOT WHAT YOU ORDERED. EXTRA SAUCE BEANS ETC WITH SIX GREASY CHIPS. MORE VEGGIES THEN FISH FOR ALMOST 20.00
5. RAMEN TASTES LIKE OCEAN WATER. ITS DISGUSTING. AND THE CHICKEN BALLS ARE NOT EVEN COOKED. COLD
6. THE WOMAN WHO WORKED THE KITCHEN SCREAMS YELLS AND WILL TELL ACTIVE MILITARY NOT TO COME BACK. HUSBAND DIDNT EVEN SAY TO WORKDS.
7. THE WORST VETERANS WEEKEND MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD
THE OWNERS HAVE ABSOLUTELY DISREGARD FOR OR ACTIVE MILITARY. THEY ACTUALLY ARE BIASED. Please health department shut this establishment down. It's your mistake you're the one that's bad you're the one that serves horrible food you're the one that doesn't have good quality you're the one that doesn't go by what your menu States

Went here tonight. Food was ok. However the woman was very rude. I was told not to come back because we said the ramen was not good. Asked for our money back on the ramen and she said to me "don't come back here" I was about to laugh but was more surprised because I was quiet and made no fuss.

However my wife held back and she can really make people look like a fool. I do find it very funny that I was banned for not doing anything.

Pro tip if you ask for your money back if the food isn't good you'll get banned.

Don't threaten me with a good time I won't be back.
