I was interested to try Nigerian cuisine and looking forward to visiting 9Jagrills for lunch. Unfortunately the experience was pretty disappointing.
From the outside it’s difficult to tell the restaurant is even open (the door was shut, no Open sign, and no visible lights from the street). When I walked in, the dining room was completely empty and filled with thick barbecue smoke, which made the space uncomfortable to sit in.
At first there didn’t appear to be anyone around. Eventually a woman came out from the back and rather abruptly asked what I was doing there. I asked if the place was open and serving food. I think her answer was yes lol.
After waiting a while, a man who appeared to be both the server and the chef came out to take my order. I initially tried to order the meat pie but was told they didn’t have it, so I switched to fried yams. Also ordered the Ayamasa stew with traditional Ofada rice (however, when I chose the traditional rice he warned me that it was an acquired taste).
The fried yams arrived extremely hot but were quite plain and unseasoned. The Ayamase stew itself was very spicy and extremely oily with a strong aroma. It was interesting to try from a culinary standpoint, but not something I particularly enjoyed.
The biggest surprise was the price: lunch came to $57, which feels exorbitant given the mediocre experience.
It’s fascinating to have Nigerian cuisine represented in Jack London Square, and the chef was friendly took time to explain the dish to me, which I appreciated. But the smoke-filled dining room, slow service, and high price made this an unpleasant visit overall.

The food and service were good. We ordered the Abula combo, but it was served without the gbegiri (bean soup). Aside from that, we enjoyed our time.

Food was good. The quality was good but they have to work on the business portion of things instead of being high priced. to make profit isnt about high price. paid $35 and she asked me what I want with it and I said goat. Im thinking since I paid that much it was included but they charged me separate for the goat about $6 and I ordered 2 extra $3.50 starch, Out the door like $49. they need a reasonable price 2 keep people coming back than a high price dat keeps people thinking maybe. It could taste good but you're competing with every other restaurant that got $15 plates. I got a lot more to help them improve but they gonna have 2 pay me for that 😭
