I took my wife here for her birthday. Truly this was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The staff was attentive without being overbearing. And they weee incredibly kind. As a bonus Chef Nelson German came out and introduced himself to my wife who is a huge Top Chef fan Thank you so much
We took the drive from San Jose to Oakland because we were missing our Dominican food! It was well worth it! When we arrived we were seated right away and our waiter Paul was great. He checked on us frequently and was very attentive to our needs. We ordered: pica pollo, pollo guisado, habichuela, Dominican spaghetti, pan tostado, papas fritas, tostones y maduros. It was delicious! Everything tasted homemade and hit the spot. Highly recommend!
We had the pernil and the sancocho. Both were very good. Service was good. Definitely recommend it.
Been here twice now with my family and tried many of their dishes- every single dish was incredible! The food and drinks are amazing! The noise level with music is a little loud and lights are a little dim, neighborhood seems safe and you can find parking nearby. Service is good as well. Highly recommend for an overall great dining experience.
Delicious food, great presentation, fantastic service. The chef was very attentive and sent some plates to our table to try other things. Everything I tried was flavorful, I specially love the ribs and moro de guandules (rice with pigeon peas)
We had a very, very enjoyable dinner at alaMar. The host/server was so congenial, it felt like we were old friends. We ordered a selection of small plates so as to sample a variety of dishes. Not being familiar with Dominican cuisine, it was a meal of discovery. The shrimp and the plantains were particularly good. In retrospect, we should have ordered some rice so as to have the fullest experience of the sauce on the shrimp and the braised greens. Next time! I had a good United draft beer because I didn't see wine on the menu. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but...the table next to us asked about wine and - surprise! The restaurant serves wine, too. Not sure why it wasn't on the menu. We loved the ambiance and the low-key feel of the place. Caveat: We ate quite early (coming from an afternoon concert). Peak dining hours may not have that same mellow feel.
Fun atmosphere with music, decor, and tasty food! Great service and laid back. All the food was delicious from vegetarian to the meat entrees and the side dishes. We had a group of 4 on a Fri evening and was able to make reservations easily. The cocktails are good too! Was finally happy to make it out here and will be back
It was amazing and great quality food. We went during lunch hours, so we had to be patience but even so it was fast. Great servant, we were very understanding.
They're never open even when they say they are. Weird.

I paid $90 and I would give it five stars if it was $30.
Service was good. The atmosphere was a vibe… The menu was difficult to read. Many items just listed its ingredients, but not how was prepared so my partner was surprised by the item they ordered.
The oxtail was tender, and more or less fell off the bones.
Bottom line is that it didn’t deliver on the promise the price made.
If you’re eating on someone else’s bill and you just really want Dominican food this is a great place to go.

Sone great dishes like the Dominican salad, Camarones Criolla and Sancocho Vegetariano. The chicken and pork platos were also well done and fresh. The service was inconsistent and not all that friendly.
Update: I went to Alamar today and bought a lot of food- rice, shrimp, greens, and oxtail. The shrimp and greens were delicious. No complaints. The rice was cool and acted as a good vehicle for my meal. My issue however was with the oxtail. They were so tiny. For $40 I expected much more or at least a side. The oxtail didn't have beans as pictured, were really small, and there weren't a lot of them. My aunts got the same thing and also had the same issue. I really like Alamar including the customer service but I was really disappointed by the oxtail and the price especially since I've had them before and enjoyed them.

The food was absolutely delicious. I was not familiar with Dominican food, and we enjoyed each of the four dishes we had. We'll definitely return.
