For now, all I can review is their BEAN & CHEESE BURRITO because so far that's all I've tried. It was HELLA BOMB. Chewy soft tortilla, nice thick but creamy beans, and lots of cheese. I'm on the fence with their salsa because yes, I'm a salsa snob. Green salsa tasted a bit mild and that might be obvious for the local clientele; while the blackened-red salsa was good but I prefer this style with seafood, like fish tacos. Found this place by a lucky search on Google and Reddit. I'm new to the area via LA, and having lived in LA for 20 years it was extremely hard to say goodbye to my beloved food spots. So, I'm stoked and grateful that I live up the street from the Grand/Lake Merritt location- though my review is based off the Berkeley spot. Parking at the Berkeley location is horrible! I'll be trying other items soon and will 100% be back for the B&C.

Staff was really friendly and recommended the carnita bowl when I asked her favorite bowl. It was absolutely delicious. When it came out I did think at first it was a salad and that I maybe ordered the wrong thing. But the bowl is just topped with very nice looking fresh greens. The chips were extra but when I tried them it made sense. They were fresh and I assume made there, really good!

Everything tasted fresh and it was lovely being able to sit outside on a beautiful day. Will definitely go back to try other menu items. The drink options looked nice

Their veggie burrito is just a bean n cheese stuffed with zucchini and green peppers. The zucchini and peppers are not cooked well and are very slimy and tastes bad. I’ve been here twice and both times it was not good or flavorful in the least bit.
This is the first time in years I couldn’t finish my food. It tasted like slime, water and cheese. Not worth the prices or food.
Thumbs all the way down

This place is great! Excellent food. I had the tacos: fish, al pastor and chicken. Everything was delicious. Chips and guac was good too, smaller portion size on that item, good for 1-2 people. Chips are thick and crispy! There is plenty of seating and the place is nicely decorated. Highly recommend!

I took my mom here and she always sends back her food but with this place, no changes so that says a lot. I had the avocado toast which was fantastic. The service was also very friendly. Would eat here again.

Visited this place with my friend after a bad experience at a wine spot. We just walked and found it while looking for another wine spot. This place is very cute. I loved the employee that greeted us, her hair, her glasses and her overall look. It was very chic. She was very warm and welcoming. She slay provided nice small talk.

They have a Happy Hour that begins at 4 pm, but we were too early. We both decided on an alcoholic drink. I can't remember the drink, but the menu had the liquor that we ordered as an option for the same drink. I had mezcal in mine and she had white rum. We also ordered 1 order of church's (3 for $10). Church's were made fresh. They came out nice and hot. Our drinks were so so so delicious. Very smooth blend.

The seating is cute too. Oh.. they do have outside seating as well. The music was a great feature. We will most definitely be back to try the food options and have more drinks. This might become one of OUR spots!!

I have been going to Comal Next Door regularly for many years now. This is my go to burrito spot for several reasons:
1. Their flavors are strong and unapologetic. The piña hot sauce (slightly brown, and not to be confused with the bright yellow/orange habanero that is good but not sweet) is so good.
2. They cook their meat consistently well. Never dry (a pet peeve of my family’s). The chicken is tender, and the barbacoa is my personal favorite.
3. They lean towards wetter/saucier style of Mexican food. The tortilla for their burritos is more steamed like Gordos instead of a grilled/flaky like La Taqueria. I happen to prefer this saucier style.

The Next Door aspect means it’s functionally a takeout operation. It’s decent as a dine-in if you want it, good for kids because it’s loud, empty, and rarely full - the bar is excellent and the margaritas are a consistently great.

I will be a lifelong devotee, it’s not everyone’s preference/style, but they do what they set out to do perfectly.

The veggie burrito was the best I've ever had. The spice level and flavor were great. Also, a good mix of veggies.

The bean and cheese burrito from Comal is the best bean and cheese burrito I have ever had. I go out of my way to get it when I want a burrito. The housemate chips and salsa are great too.
