The environment here was outstanding and made our date night one to remember. The food was fantastic, but the service really set it apart—the staff were so polite and attentive. We had an amazing time and will definitely be back!
Date night with the hubs, both of us wanted to try a new place and we love Sushi. We were BLOWN AWAY by the fantastic service, delicious options, and great suggestions on sake. Make sure to get the "Alicia Roll." We had never tried sushi with sliced jalapenos on top and it was amazing! We were stuck between two sake varieties and they gave us samples of each so we could make an accurate choice. Sat at the sushi bar, what a fantastic experience. We had two rolls. a chef's special of nigiri, mixed tempura, peppers, and edamame. All of it was excellent, fresh and flavorful. We ended the night with a dessert of pineapple sorbet served inside a frozen pineapple! What a nice addition to the texture of the night. Can't say enough about this little gem in Montclair. We will be back for sure.

The food was excellent and each dish unique. The fish was super fresh and the warm oysters phenomenal.
This is an amazing Japanese restaurant in the heart of the Montclair Village! I love the neighborhood feel combined with fresh fish, specialty rolls and super attentive staff!
Always delicious, cozy atmosphere and really nice servers even when we bring our grandchildren, my husband loves the collar, I love the hamachi.

Always spectacular service. The food is consistently excellent fresh fish, and great presentation. Great neighborhood spot.
Our dinner was delicious, as usual. Started with miso soup (always good), then had an outstanding warm mushroom salad over wilted greens. The 'shrooms were simply wonderful. Then came the mixed tempura, as usual delicate and tasty. The only dish that did not excite was the "American wagyu beef," which was chewier than we would have liked. It really was not approaching wagyu quality, although at that price point it really could not have been. The server offered to take the dish off our bill, but we declined. The taste was good but it just wasn't tender. In all, delicious and we will be back.
The sushi is consistently fresh, carefully prepared, and delicious! I have one concern: They are so busy that, if you try ordering delivery after 6pm, it can take AGES to arrive, which is not fair to the drivers and annoying to the diners.

Restaurantji Recommends
Unfortunately, the day I picked up my order the restaurant was prepping for a catering event so I didn't get a real feel for the atmosphere. Also, when I placed my order on-line there was no mention that the restaurant would be closed to the general public due to a scheduled event. I lucked out by ordering in advance. No biggee, but I would have been somewhat upset if I had made the trip only to be turned away due to a planned event.

Found Kakui Sushi on Open Table and needed to check it out. Our reservation was on a very warm evening over Labor Day weekend and the restaurant was, apparently, unusually quiet. Ordered their mushroom salad which was absolutely delicious and nothing like anything we've had in a Japanese restaurant before. The Oakland PD and Warriors rolls rounded out a delicious meal. Our server, Jocelyn, was terrific. We're in Contra Costa and normally head to the Walnut Creek area for dinner but this was so much easier, especially for parking. Will definitely be back!
Always a great meal with very friendly staff!

We've been going to Kakui for many years because they have really outstanding sushi! This last visit was no different food wise -- everything was excellent and we were even able to order a roll that was removed from the menu recently. (The Four Seasons) Kenny, our server, was AMAZING. So attentive and friendly and apologetic when our food took so long to come. In fact, it took 2 whole hours for 3 of us to get an edamame starter, 3 rolls, and 3 orders of nigiri. That was the longest we've ever been at Kakui, and Kenny felt so bad that he brought us some seaweed salad and then some gyoza while we waited. Apparently there was only one sushi chef that night for a restaurant full of people. So my less than five star review was due to the long wait. But we would give Kenny 10 stars if we could!
The food is delicate - server's and cooks great. We will definitely go back! Great atmosphere too!
