Growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I was totally spoiled by the food — especially the green chile and red chile that you just can’t replicate anywhere else. Even though I’m a California native by birth, I spent my most formative years in New Mexico, and that shaped my palate in a permanent way.
Over the last 20 years living in the Bay Area, I’ve been on a quiet mission: every time a friend from high school or middle school in New Mexico came to visit, I’d try to find a restaurant here that could even remotely live up to what we were raised on. I’d take them to places I thought might pass muster — and every time, they were politely disappointed. So was I.
But today changed everything.
I think I may have just found the best Mexican restaurant I’ve ever experienced in California — hands down. And no, I’m not exaggerating.
🌮 Taqueria La Comales Mexican Grill in Oakland • 🌶️ They will make it spicy if you want it — not just California-spicy, but real-deal chile heat. • 🥑 Fresh, high-quality ingredients that taste home-cooked, not mass-produced. • 💸 Extremely affordable — the kind of value that’s almost impossible to find in the Bay now. • 🫓 Authentic flavor — I mean it. The chile here sings. It reminded me of home.
If you grew up on Hatch green chile and are constantly chasing that familiar, soulful flavor, this is your spot. I can’t even tell you how good it felt to finally taste something that honored where I come from.

A personal favorite for many years… often a post work highlight. Lovely friendly ladies making fast and delicious burritos etc
Always bopping by with the family to grab burritos (super for me, jr for the missus and child’s for the wee ones) Consistency slightly varies as there’s several workers… but always delicious and more than filling. Personal favorite is a wet super carnitas burrito.. Mexican coke and the hot sauces that never disappoint.
Only a couple of chairs inside.. almost always get our food to go.
Love this popular community spot.
Parking can be tricky depending on time of day , (several street parking options) but it’s hella easy to reach on the bus too.

I stopped going to this place because they don't give you radishes or anything they charge you for chips compare with other taquerias this one is no bueno before they used to have all kinds of salsas but now look like they don't care anymore

I've been coming to the lil gem for over 20 years! Some of the staff have been there that long as well. Everything is so good! I always get the grilled chicken supe burrito with everything and make it wet! The enchilada sauce it on hit and tasted the same way since the day they opened! They are only open til 4:30p so go before they close! Absolutely amazing!

The food here is amazing. One of my favorite places to go to treat myself to some good food, the atmosphere is amazing the line can get long depending on when you get there but when you're inside and you're ordering food they are really nice.If you don't know much Spanish you can still order and they take to substitutions really well I usually get fish in my burrito instead of meat and it does take a little longer but if you ask they will provide.Amazing staff, just amazing people to be around and talk too. they have a lot of topping options good drinks very visible. They have a paper menu and a menu above where your ordering from. Just overall really nice place.
Kid-friendliness: Although there's not much space inside, when doing a takeout the packaging in the containers it comes in especially the quesadillas and burritos very kid friendly it's just foil or a little cardboard like plate, Bowl with Saran Wrap covering the top they're smaller burritos I usually get for my little sister who's six she loves them.The only downside is they are next to a bar so usually walking over there or staying outside just sometimes I see smokers, relatively loud but inside it's harmless.

I have been eating here for over 7 years. This place makes the quintessential wet super burrito. The flavors are straight from Mexico and it just doesn't get better than this. Every ingredient is very high quality. The toasting on the tortilla is superior. The way the sauce and cheese melts on the top is so satisfying. Prices here are fair, and there's a self-service area for limes, cilantro, and salsa.
