Ever since Jo's Sushi Bar closed, I've been searching for a comparable sushi place and I'm glad to say, The Shoya fits the bill. I judge a sushi place not on their rolls but the quality of their fresh fish and sushi rice...and this place doesn't disappoint. We got the 10 piece nigiri omakase and and sushi combo (7 piece nigiri and roll) as well as the tekka don and tempura and wvwrything was well prepared and delicious! The sake was served in a cool looking dispenser I've never seen before, which was a nice touch! I'm not in Pleasant Hill very often but I'm happy to know this will be my go-to spot for great sushi when I am in town.

Terrible food. The sashimi had a strong fishy smell and didn’t taste fresh. Portions were tiny, and overall quality was disappointing. The place was empty, which probably explains the poor food turnover.

They got fish from the bad fish market so it isn’t fresh. This place is best at American sushi

We stumbled upon the grand opening of The Shoya Japanese Restaurant in Pleasant Hill, and it was absolutely amazing! 🍣 From the fresh sushi rolls to the melt-in-your-mouth sashimi (they even served fresh grated wasabi with our sashimi 🤤), everything was incredible.

The staff were so friendly, and the vibes of the restaurant were amazing. We are so excited to see such a wonderful business join us here in Pleasant hill! ✨️❤️

Fun twist: Our waitress recognized us from another sushi place! Remembered how we liked to share a large asahi and even gave us some of the best matcha ice cream wrve ever had saying how wonderful it was to see us.🍨 Truly felt kizmet to find this new gem.

Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and it is now our go-to spot for sushi in the area 🍣
Already craving their Negitoro roll!!

If you love Japanese food or sushi, this is a new must-go-to local spot.

Welcome this new business to our community & stop by for a bite! ✨️❤️

I've eaten at over 50 sushi restaurants and my cousin is a sushi chef. The quality and taste of the rolls here to die for. We had

-land and sea
-Kamakaze
-Melts in your mouth
-an assortment of nigiri (my favorite is the halibut)
-Kamasu nigiri
-lion king
-spider

Of all of these, if you had to try one. Don't. Try two. Land and Sea and melts on your mouth.

I’ve lived in the Walnut Creek area just over a year… easily the best sushi! I had the mango mango and melt in the mouth. Great food and service, I highly recommend.

It's a pretty solid 3.5 - they are still ironing out kinks for dinner service, a lot of custom when we visited, plan to arrive early.
In general fish was fresh, if not always mind-blowing. The saba in particular was excellent; the small dollop of wasabi on the uni was a bit inexplicable, since it was fresh and didn't taste like it was from Santa Barbara.
Shrimp tempura was more like an ebi-fry unfortunately - but that's pretty common / what's lacking when it's non-Japanese proprietors. The rest of the veggie tempura is good.

A new restaurant in Martinez! Lots of parking outside. The restaurant is spacious and had good music playing. The service was fast and friendly. We got our food super quickly. Everything was delicious and extremely fresh and very affordable. I would 100% recommend checking it out (not a paid or requested review, just wishing them success!)

My wife and I came here with our baby for lunch and the staff was so kind and the food was delicious. 10/10 would recommend. I got the bento box with teriyaki chicken and katsu chicken. Both were great, also the side salad that comes with the bento was also dang good.

My new favorites Japanese restaurant! The sashimi was fresh, fresh wasabi, great presentation. The rolls were delicious. I ordered the Melt in your Mouth and Titanic. The beef teriyaki and tempura bento was the best I can remember. The beef was tender and reminded me of wagyu. The tempura was perfectly crispy and not overly battered. Service was friendly and attentive. 3 hand rolls for $12 was scrumptious. I can’t wait to come back!

So good that I went three times in two weeks! Their fish is super fresh, portion sizes are great, prices are reasonable, and everyone is so friendly. Their nigiri selection is amazing and their chirashi don is incredible. Highly recommend this restaurant, it has quickly become my go-to for sushi.
