This place holds a special place in my heart. I grew up in Poway, and back then, this was the cheapest way to fill your stomach. To my surprise, it still is!!

I love the California burrito here, and although it’s different from what one would normally classify as a ā€œCalifornia burrito,ā€ it remains one of my favorite renditions of the dish. Back when I was living out of state, even if I only had one night to visit SD, I’d spend my dinner here every single time without fail.

Good food, good portions, good prices, and they're fast. The carnitas really kicks hole. If you like fish tacos, which I personally don't, they're only 99 cents. Hard to beat!

Really mixed experience. Tried them a couple times and half the food we ordered was pretty good, half was just so-so at best (I remember the burritos were really good, but I wasn’t impressed with the bland, mostly breading fish tacos, or the chopped cheese tacos).

Service was absent-minded and even careless. The staff just seemed used to dealing with regulars , which is totally fine, except then they ignored/forgot about us, and didn’t make any attempt to help us with any questions about the menu. Items came out at different times, and they completely forgot about one until we managed to flag someone down- and then we had to basically explain it to them all over.

Disappointing because I thought this might become a favorite spot.

Update: I’m just getting over a bad bout of food poisoning, and I narrowed down the cause to be the shrimp taco I had here. Downgrading to one star and recommending others avoid. I can’t give this place another shot.

Taco Taco Poway – A Hidden Gem for Mexican Street-Style Eats

Tucked away near Walmart and right next to the DMV, Taco Taco Poway is a local hidden gem that delivers quick, affordable Mexican-style street food. Though the interior is modest and a bit cramped, this casual spot draws regulars with its budget-friendly menu, unique taco options, and laid-back vibe.

🌮 The Food

Taco Taco offers a solid variety of Mexican staples, from tacos and burritos to appetizers and combo plates. I sampled a few of their most talked-about tacos:

$0.99 Fish Taco – One of their best-known deals. It comes with shredded cabbage and a small piece of fried fish. While it’s a great value, the portion is understandably small and the flavor is basic.

Pulled Pork Taco – The standout of the meal. The pulled pork is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and pairs perfectly with their tangy BBQ sauce. Highly recommended.

Octopus Taco – A specialty item. The octopus is tender, but lacks freshness, which slightly detracted from the overall experience.

Surf 'N' Turf Taco – Topped with scallops and chopped beef. While the scallops were decent, the beef was underwhelming, lacking both flavor and texture.

Overall, the taco quality varies depending on the protein, but there are some real gems to be found—especially the pulled pork.

šŸ½ Atmosphere & Service

The restaurant itself is small with limited indoor seating, which can feel a little crowded during busy hours. There’s self-serve water, and staff interaction is minimal. The ambiance is casual and no-frills, but there are some nice touches, like a bar shelf decorated with small, colorful Mexican crafts that add cultural charm.

🐶 Pet-Friendly & Parking

Outdoor tables are available, making this a dog-friendly spot for those who want to dine with their pets. The restaurant is located in a large shopping plaza with plenty of parking, so finding a spot is rarely an issue.

āœ… Final Thoughts

Taco Taco Poway may not look like much from the outside, but it offers affordable, fast, and sometimes unexpectedly delicious tacos in a convenient location. The pulled pork taco alone is worth the visit. While not every item hits the mark, the overall experience is solid for a quick bite or casual lunch—especially if you’re in the area for errands or a DMV appointment.
