The ambiance looks great, so I decided to give this a try despite knowing the dim sum looks frozen + reheated. The actual dim sum item was terrible, and the fresh / wok dishes tasted of rancid oil. My stomach hurts after. I’m really disappointed because I had high hopes for Downtown’s only nice looking Chinese spot.
I’m actually shocked that there’s Chinese food this bad in the area

C’mon. Each soup dumpling is $2. Each has thick mushy dough that falls apart. Each leaks soup, each were the worse XLB I’ve ever had. Gosh was good, noodles with nothing but onions and green onions was $22 and ok I guess but I mean c’mon! Just don’t have soup dumplings on the menu and the place might be fine. The waiter said the manager told him the soup dumplings “just does this sometimes” and that was that. Our neighbors got soup dumplings too and same thing. This place is skippable.

Many will agree that even though there are many Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area that this one just keeps you coming back for its flavor. One favorite is the Shanghai Noddles that is great for 2 people and you can combine it with any of the Pot Stickers. For drinks the Lemon Ice Tea or the Thai Ice Tea. There are many more but you can't go wrong with these if you are coming in for the first time. Wait times are longer for parties of 3+ and reservations are suggested. To no surprise this restaurant keeps busy almost every day of the week. The staff are friendly and have always had positive impressions from each server. If you bisit during the right time it can be quiet but it can get noisy when it is at full capicity; nevertheless, it still is enjoyable.

If you’re a fan of dumplings and bao, this place is an absolute must-try!
The bao are perfectly fluffy with generous, flavorful fillings — each bite is warm, soft, and deeply satisfying.
You can really taste the quality and freshness in every dish.
Service was great, and the vibe of the place is cozy but modern, making it a great spot for both a quick bite or a casual meal with friends.
Highly recommend this spot if you’re craving authentic, freshly made bao and dumplings. Can’t wait to come back and try more!

Special needs community please stay away from this place. Just got thrown out for a normal stimming behavior. Rude language and not open to feedback

Phenomenal place serving high quality dumplings, pot stickers and related dishes. Also tons of vegetarian and vegan options. Must try in the bay area!

Not bad, just not…good either. I felt like some of the dishes were off balanced in flavor (hot and sour soup was SO SOUR), I wonder if the chef tastes the dishes as they’re cooking. The baked BBQ pork buns were also super dry, although that might’ve been our bad for ordering them at 8 pm. I’m assuming they had been baked that day, but they weren’t fresh tasting.
Anyways, not trying to be rude or write a scathing review, the service was very kind and attentive, they refilled our water like 4 times and we weren’t there that long. Ordering on the iPad is also straightforward and prevents miscommunication, so that’s good.
All in all, I just think you can get more bang for your buck.

I finally had the chance to try out this restaurant. At first glance, the exterior isn’t very impressive and might make you second-guess your choice. However, once you step inside, it’s a completely different vibe — cozy, clean, and inviting.
The staff were friendly and attentive, which definitely added to the overall experience. When the food arrived, everything looked beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the taste didn’t quite live up to the visuals. The dishes were just okay — not bad, but nothing memorable either.
If you’re coming for the atmosphere and some nice photos, this place delivers. But if you’re looking for an outstanding culinary experience, you might leave a little underwhelmed.

Bao in Redwood City is awesome, especially if you're into dim sum and good Chinese food. The food's great, the service is quick and friendly, and the atmosphere is nice. I totally recommend it for a good meal. Harry, the owner, is super friendly and always smiling. He makes you feel welcome. You'll have a great time there. I'll definitely tell people to go!

I ordered their string beans, pork chili dumplings, and chicken lettuce wrap to go. All items were extremely delicious - the black bean sauce served up with the green beans was a game changer. I used some of the left over sauce the next day for sautéed greens and it was so good. The chicken lettuce wrap was fresh and quite filling. The pork chili dumplings were great. All in all a good find and one I would order from again!
