I've seen people in the Foodies of Rocklin/Roseville Facebook group craving Empress Chicken or Hainan Chicken, so I was excited that Rooster & Rice is one of the new Granite Bay Local Kitchens restaurants. Rooster & Rice is considered Thai cuisine, whereas Empress and Hainan Chicken are Chinese cuisine.To try to reduce my carb intake and eat more veggies, I ordered The Riceless Bowl. You can select extra cucumber and extra cilantro for no extra charge. The veggies are cauliflower, broccoli, and some carrot rounds. I believe the vegetables are unseasoned. The poached or boiled chicken is also simply seasoned, just salt and the natural chicken broth. You will need the dipping sauce to add flavor.KMG Sauce comes by default, but you can substitute gluten free Ginger Scallion Sauce for free. I believe KMG stands for Khao Mun Gai, which is the Thai version of Hainanese chicken rice. The KMG sauce base is the signature Mother Sauce, the founding chef's mother's recipe, then the restaurant adds soybeans, ginger, garlic, cilantro, and scallions to it. It reminded me of Kinder's Teriyaki Sauce but thickened and supplemented with many aromatics. I look forward to trying the Ginger Scallion Sauce with my leftovers. I got it as extra when I inquired about the KMG sauce. Ginger Scallion Sauce is what is typically served with Empress or Hainan Chicken.If you do prefer to have rice, The Original Bowl allows a choice between jasmine chicken rice or vegan brown rice. As of 4/22/23, for $2, you can add Veggies. Again, you can select extra cucumber and extra cilantro for no extra charge. I didn't realize the jasmine rice was flavored with chicken, so now I am curious to try that.The Riceless and Original Bowls both come with a side of chicken broth with some cilantro in it. The Vegetarian Bowl comes with a side of vegetarian broth. Yay for included soup!I met Arthur, the store launcher, who was helping people order and checking if they were enjoying the food. He was very nice.Grand opening of Local Kitchens is Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 1 pm to 4 pm. First 300 customers will each get a free cup of Humphry Slocombe ice cream. There will be music, games, a photo op, balloon animals, and face painting. Congratulations to Local Kitchens, and welcome to the area!
