I recently visited Boxcar Eats in Old Sacramento and to be honest, I wasn’t all that impressed. The place looks fun from the outside with signs for Dole Whip and Tillamook Ice Cream, which definitely caught my eye. Inside, the decor was kind of cool with colorful chandeliers and lots of seating, but the atmosphere felt a bit empty and lacking energy—even though it was evening.
The service was okay, nothing special. I tried the Dole Whip and was expecting something a little more flavorful. It was just average and didn’t really live up to the hype. Same goes for the ice cream—looked great in the picture, but taste-wise, it didn’t wow me.
It’s not a terrible spot, and maybe I just went at an off time, but overall it didn’t feel like a place I’d go out of my way to visit again. It has potential, but needs a bit more warmth and quality to really shine.

False advertising, no dole whip its sorbet . Also medium size double scoop was actually just a full one scoop in a medium cup. Tried once but won't again.

Customer service was excellent, but the Dole Whip was disgusting. I’ve had dole whip in Hawaii and Disneyland, and I’ve always enjoyed the creamy taste. The dole whip here tasted like chemicals and was very watery. When I asked the cashier about it, they were very forthcoming and told us that the machines were old, and that sometimes the dole whip would come out watery and sometimes it would come out creamy. I appreciated the honesty from the cashier and will never visit again. Don’t come here for the dole whip.
Portions are very small, no samples and the dole whip was icy slush not creamy smooth like all the other places I’ve had dole whip. Also, when you get half way down in the container while trying to enjoy subpar dole whip, you’ll come to the bigger realization that you got cheated on quantity because theres a hole of empty space in the middle of the container. The butter pecan tasted like coffee, and had no way of knowing in advance which would be a great flavor WITHOUT SAMPLES, I won’t be returning. I suggest management consider a 2 or 3 limit on samples, that would be considerate.

you’d think paying $13 for two single scoops would get you adequate scoops but they were kid-size, mini scoops. Upsetting to say the least. Moreover, the ice cream was bland and watery. save your money. environment was dirty and weird music was playing. no samples either.

Been here a few times, owner definitely does not care about employees; and for that alone I will not be coming back. They seem overworked, understaffed, and generally like a business that is not run well. Despite this, do see them fighting exhaustion to give quality service. One curly haired boy in particular has been great everytime I’ve come in. Frozen yogurt is just your standard yogurt.
