Today was my attempt to make it to Mahoroba Japanese Bakery before they sell out. For context, I stopped here on my way to Tahoe on Friday around 1:50pm to find that they were closed because they were sold out.
I was then determined to make it before they sell out on my way back to the bay after my Tahoe trip. Sunday morning, at 11:50am — I was confident I’d make it to a pretty stocked bakery. Surprise, surprise - they were sold out on a lot of their goods but I was grateful to purchase from the remaining inventory available.
When you walk in, the employees are hard at work, scrambling around like little worker ants! The young man that helped us recommended the chicken teriyaki meatball & the green tea kobe cream delight - I definitely grabbed those and added on their kobe cream delight, whole red beans (an pan), and strawberry anko cream. Regardless if these were the runts of the baked goods, I was super excited to try these.
At this very moment, I open up my paper bag and feel the thrill of those labubu collectors. I pull the goods out of the modest paper bag they provide and decide to try only two:
Chicken teriyaki meatball (while it was warm): It was great, I’m not sure I’d get it again but I really appreciated the bread to chicken meatball ratio was perfect. The bread was my favorite part of the bites, it was both sweet & savory.
Green tea kobe cream delight — now this one was special. The green tea cream was really a delight, and the bread is just delicious and soft.
I can’t wait to try the rest when I get back home but I can see why they sell out. Unlike other asian bakeries, their baked goods aren’t oily and the bread is so soft as if it just came out the oven.
I would love to come back here and try more things. I’d highly recommend visitors to come as early as you can if you’d like to access a much more full inventory.
Also it seems cash is preferred here, but if that’s not an option for you then they have a card reader too.

One of my best bakery in Sacramento. Love this place and the breads are so good and affordable. I would say this is a Japanese bakery that takes me back all the way to Japan.

I came here for the first time yesterday and grabbed a few different pastries to try. The Strawberry Anko is to die for! I am still thinking about it today. It had the perfect balance of sweetness from the cream and red bean and tartness from the fresh strawberry. The other pastries were good too, not too sweet. I will definitely return to try the rest of the items on the menu!

Tasty but they sell out super fast . When I went there were people directly walking up to the case, while the employees were busy, effectively cutting the line occasionally clearing out the shelf. Love the food though so definitely worth the wait on busy days.

Delicious Japanese pastries and very kind and efficient service. Our favorite bakery in town!
Super ultra tasty and fun. Do it go there try it out tell me I’m wrong with the flaky residue of deliciousness all over your face.
I really like this Japanese bakery! A bit small but my all time favorites are the Sunrise, Sweet Cream Cheese, and An Pan (red bean). I was a bit disappointed to find out they don’t make Kare Pan anymore and no korokke items I’m guessing they’ve chosen not to offer deep-fried items in their bakery? which is understandable, their baked goods are still delicious anyway. The service, however, hasn’t been particularly warm or welcoming. Every time I visit, there’s usually a young guy working who just quietly takes my order and without much expression. (Not rude) 😅 I recommend getting there early because some of the popular items sell out quickly. One time, the older man in front of us bought the entire tray of sunrise! Since there were no rules or limits on how many a customer can take,(I don't know if they have it now) I only managed to get two, even though there were four of us wanting sunrise.. 🥲 Since then, I’ve learned my lesson and just make sure to arrive early! 🤣
