This was the second winery visited on our third day in Napa, overall number 9 and coincidentally they are called Nine Suns. I promise, this was unplanned, I just realized this while writing the review after counting all the wineries visited up to this point. Our friend Juan Carlos Vega recommended this stop and arranged it with Flora, the communication via email was easy and straightforward, so we went knowing the cost of their wine, their tasting fees and everything needed. So the day arrived and we found ourselves driving on the same route we drove a few months ago to go to OVID, not that I didn’t know it but I just wanted it to sound more romantic! I remember that time (the day we went to OVID) that we stopped right in front of this winery to take a few pictures of the landscaping, and back then we didn’t know the existence of Nine Suns. Just by the neighbors you can tell they must be making great juice because these lands are blessed! We arrived a few minutes earlier and were received by Flora, she is very sweet and offered us a glass of Sauvignon Blanc while we waited for another small group to leave. The views from this Estate are astonishing, the architecture is off the chart, a super modern top of the art “tasting room” (uniquely decorated by his sister) winery in the middle of this heavenly territory. At this point, I thought it couldn’t get any better that that. Then Jason took us over and started to show us all the fermentation tanks, aging room, beautiful underground cellar (a guitar shaped cellar), and explained how everything was built (a cave made with a material called elephant armor), and how meticulous they were with every little detail, even the outside seating is made of concrete which can be heated in the winter. All of the above was done with the company of their German shepherd who knows the trajectory better than the owners, he only needed a key to open the door before we got to the “next area”.Now the great moment arrived to taste red wines in a beautiful decorated tasting room!!! Jason ported 2 reds, the 2012 and 2013 vintages so we had a great opportunity to feel how approachable the 2012 is right now versus how austere the 2013 currently is, but at the same time I believe the 2013 will be much better in a couple of years. Since it was a little past noon we needed some cheese to accompany the wine, so my girlfriend went to the car to get it, this definitely helped to reduce the high levels of tannins and let our palate keep working, but on a funny side, I discovered right after we ended the tasting that they had a couple of cheese options on the menu – oops! After endless talking points, photos, drinks and admiring the succulents we proceed to order wine, Jason was super accommodating, he allowed us to mix vintages at our luxury, my brother bought 2012, 2013 and 2014 + a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and I got the 2011*, 2012 and 2013!You may be asking why 2011? Despite the year being a difficult vintage for most wineries in Napa, Robert Parker disliking it, as well as other wine critics, I have discovered that most wines from the mountains didn’t suffer the affect of the excessive rains of the year, I have drank a few 2011 from serious producers and they have been amazing, additionally that vintage is ready to drink now, so this will allow me to enjoy a bottle on Nine Suns very soon while the 2012 may still need a year or two and the 2013 I won’t touch it until 2023+.If you ever go to Nine Suns don’t forget to buy the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, my girlfriend and I are lamenting now for not getting it, we’ll have to go back to Napa sooner than planned…
Eye opening tour with insight of winery operation sales and branding with touch of personal history. Truly fascinating of you're interested in it.
Exceptional state of the art visit
Awesome, unique experience. Jason was a great guide. Feel like you're in set of a James Bond movie. Super contemporary without being futuristic
The beauty of this place is perfect for showcasing some of the best Mt Prichard Cabernet s. Appt only.
