Decided to go on a quick trip for the holiday weekend. Decided that San Clemente was the spot. Spent some time in old town and saw the pier. Then decided to eat dinner here. It was delicious. I really wanted to try lots of things on the menu. I tried the Maui Onion Soup and the Tempura Spam. My youngest got the chicken katsuand the oldest ordered the nachos with kalua pig. It was enormous. Can't wait to come back to try other things.

Fantastic service and meal portions are in line with price. Also, plenty of parking in their own lot.

If you're thinking about going to Hapa Js for dinner, you should rethink your dinner plans. Online they say they're open till 9 o'clock. I went twice this week once at 8:05 and once at 8:30 and both times they said they were closed, multiple people sitting at the bar talking to the bartender still getting drinks who is the one that told us they were closed. He was very unsure about what time he closed. He said 830 or 9 o'clock and it was 830 and he wouldn't let us sit down knowing what we want. Been a local in San Clemente for years. Been coming here for years. This place has gone completely downhill. Every time this place changes ownership. It drops in quality whether it's packed for happy hour and they have one or two servers on a shift, or they are just not into helping their customers. Will not be returning to Hapa's. They clearly can't even be consistent about what time they close.

Tried going in solo for taco Tuesday. Not busy. Staff kept walking past without a nod. Bartender had a full deck. Didn’t notice me?
Finally I just ordered to-go and went back to the hotel.
The tacos were fantastic. Won’t be going back without my husband.

We love Hapa J's! The food is really terrific, the service is always great and it's a fun casual place. You feel like you are in the North Shore when you are here or just on vacation in San Clemente and we live here! It's a fun place with great food! A+ every time.

Absolutely delicious food! Loved the vibe in the restaurant too, the open windows, surfer vibe, really added to the Hawaiian theme. My son said he had the best pulled pork quesadilla he's ever had! the thai beef salad was so yummy, and spicy, but in a good way. The tuna melt and cheesesteak sandwich were awesome too. We were really impressed and highly recommend 👏🏼

Went here for lunch on June 29th, ordered the nachos as an “appetizer” to share with all our family. Had no idea that nachos don’t come with some type of meat, so our server, Jessica, asked “what meat would you like”, we ordered the meat. A different waitress brings out the three meals for our three family members, they started eating, we waited for about 10 minutes till the appetizer that I specially asked to be brought out before our main dish came out in sync with our main dish.
Ask for the bill, saw we were charged $28.98 for nachos because the “meat” was an add’l $12.00. I then brought this to the attention of our server and she said “meat is extra”. I then said “ok, but I ordered this as an appetizer, BEFORE, the main dishes came out and it was brought out late with our main dish which was by the way after everyone else who started to eat”. NOTE: since everyone already was eating their main dish, they didn’t eat the appetizer now 😔 She said NOTHING, just stared at me. No apology, nothing!! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, TERRIBLE WAY TO TREAT A GUEST. Which leaves me no other option then to leave very little tip and a bad review.
Hopefully a lesson learned for Jessica and Happa J’s…. For me, I will NEVER go back!!

The food is really good and is definitely a place where you can come to enjoy food when you're hungry. My family and I make sure to save our stomachs until we get there so we can eat as much as we want. Super good, would recommend definitely.

The food was good. Service was slow. When the server took our order, he was apologetic. This restaurant needs more food service staff.
I'm surprised to see that the restaurant allowed dogs.
Animals are not allowed inside a food facility. We brought this up with the front desk hostess. She had no clue...

While eating dinner here, I thought I was in Hawaii. My wife was incredibly impressed. The flavors and presentation of our dinner plates were outstanding and memorable enough to want to come back for more. The teriyaki burger was just right - sauce was seasoned well enough to bring out flavors in the rest of the burger. Although fries were a bit salty, the burger was more than enough to be satisfied. The Loco Moco was also amazing - paired with pickled mango and Kim chee. Gravy on the side was my mistake. The next time, I will ask them to add more on top of the whole thing, eggs and all. Rice was perfect, showcasing the tender hamburger patty. Dinner was so amazing, we had to get a slice of cheesecake dessert because it had to be tried based on principle, especially after that meal. I highly recommend it. Don't be afraid to find parking and get into Hapa J's as this meal is a fantastic experience.
