My wife and I used to patronize this place as the food used to be good and the old lady (floor manager) knows each customer's food order! Recently, it was sold and the old lady tending the floor is no longer around! The place has improved physically but the overall impression most specially the food menu and ordering seems to be chaotic! We ordered shrimp fried rice, beef and honey walnut shrimp! The wait time was fairly good and in a short while our food was served! My plate contained fried rice with the beef and 1 vegetable egg roll. My wife's plate had the shrimp fried rice and fried rice and 1 vegetable egg roll! There was a third plate that contained what looked like honey walnut shrimp with fried rice and 1 vegetable egg roll! We were expecting to at least have 2 empty plates a plate of beef, a plate of honey walnut shrimp and a plate of shrimp fried rice, all separate from each other! I wasn't expecting to have the food to be in a messy disorder! Anyway, the lady said this is the way they are served now! ??? Taste was okay but the honey walnut shrimp is not what you would expect what it should look like! Price was okay but we were disappointed! Might not come back again!

It seems like they have two people there who take turns cooking. It takes a long time and the service is terrible. Used to be a good place, and the food if you can wait still is sometimes good. I think new people own it. I took my mother there for lunch and I felt bad for the people who were working there and the people who call in - people with pickup services were there to pick up and the orders had just disappeared :( if you have role time to wait, go - and you won't be disappointed by some of the food, just don't order anything off the menu.

It used to be the best Chinese food your money can buy in Rancho Bernardo. Not any longer, not under the new management. We were made to wait near an hour at our table for our order, and they canceled one dish because they couldn’t make it.Cooking is OK, but they are grossly understaffed both in waiting and cooking staff.

We went to Hunan under new management. We still have not been served. If you are not Chinese, you are not a priority. I think we have been drinking tea for over an hour while Chinese customers who arrived 20 minutes ago are already eating for the last 15 minutes. I figure we'll wait long enough to taste if the wait is worth it. I suppose anything tastes great if you wait this long.

We were in the area and went back to Hunan, but I was surprised to see new owner & management. I thought I was going to get the same quality food we used to order. Paid more money but when we got home. I missed the savory smell of their food. We ordered CD2 and CD9. Combination of food but we were disappointed. The taste isn't authentic. Sad part when the original owner left, new food but another fail with Chinese restaurant in my book. I don't think I'll come back.

Update to this review: The original Hunan has been sold to new owners and the name has changed to "Hometown Taste". Went there for lunch but they only offered the dinner menu saying today (12/31) is a holiday (I thought 1/1 was the holiday). I'll have to see if it's the same, better, or ? when I can try the lunch menu and if the prices changed.

authentic Chinese food, tasted great, we ordered a chef special boiled spicy fish, the pot size is so big and we ends up only ordered 2 items for 3 persons (waitress suggestion), price is very reasonable, the owner is new and the waitress works 28 years for 5 generations of ownership, they welcomes customer with true heart.I wish I can return but we are tourist and leaving today, feel lucky to find this.

Very authentic Chinese food. They changed their owner recently and added a lot of authentic Chinese food but still have the old food. We will come back as usual

After 42 years in business (with various owners, hi Michael!), Hunan is now Hometown Taste, with new owners and a new chef. They've raised their prices a bit and changed their menu quite a bit - some stuff we really miss, but they've added other things like tea smoked duck, which we didn't try but could be interesting. Update: We've been back twice and they've got their act together. The noodle soups are as we remember them! Even better (?), the menu is just wrong. Everything under the 'Noodle' section is a noodle soup, they just don't say that. My favorite Pork Chop Noodle Soup is still there, but misnamed 'Spare Rib Noodle Soup' - I had it today. The 'Mustard Pork' is really 'Mustard Green Pork Soup' (a slight difference!). And the ones that say 'pork' you can get with any meat, like chicken, beef, or shrimp, so in effect most of our old noodle soups are still there. After the mess last month things are good again (and food was coming out to tables at decent speed) - we're going to keep coming back. We don't get anything but the noodle soups, so can't comment on the other dishes.

Extremely bad customer service. Gave our pick up order to someone else and refused to refund us.

I ordered Hot & Sour Soup, Garlic Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice & Egg Rolls via phone on 12-26-23. They told me 20 minutes, I came in to pickup my order 25 minutes later and it was not ready. I stood in the dining room 15 minutes before someone greeted me. The young woman that greeted me asked about my order and I stated I had a phone order to pickup. She then walked away and spoke to a different woman in the back of the restaurant. I stood there for another 10 minutes, where I then went to the back of the restaurant to ask about my food. The woman handed me a receipt for just hot & sour soup and when I told her I had more food she didn't seem to understand. Then an older woman came from the kitchen and asked what the issue was. I then asked where my food was and how much. She brought my food out but the other woman was screaming at the older woman that was helping me in Chinese. Once I asked how much again they just stood there. It was the most bizarre experience. The whole time I was trying to check out one woman was screaming at the other. They charged me the wrong amount and one of my items was wrong. In all time spent in the restaurant was 35 minutes not including the initial 25 minutes from when I called. Shocking first and last time experience.... I will never go here again! Horribly service.

I placed an order at 7:00 pm on Christmas Eve to be picked up at 8:00 pm. When i arrived at the restaurant at 8:05 pm my order wasn't ready and when I asked when the order would be ready the hostess said "a while". I waited there an hour and a half and when I kept asking about my order, the hostess kept saying "be patient be patient it's almost ready". Finally at 9:30 my food was ready and when I went to get it, the same lady said "we've been trying to call you, your food's been ready for a while" even though I've been asking about the food and waiting outside the restaurant. No apology and no taking accountability that they made a mistake. I used to come here all the time, but I'm not coming back after this horrible service.

I can thoroughly say that I was very disappointed with our food. Ordered some of my previous favorites, Tia Bora beef, chicken chop suey and mayonnaise shrimp. What we got was some oily beef dish and mediocre dishes. We have been eating at Hunans for over ten years , everything was delicious before, not now. I'm going to miss Chef, Ruben and the ladies, best of luck and thank you for the memories.

You think you're being slick when you add a few dollars to the bill and charge a different price than what you list on the menu. You are not slick. That's 1 star behavior.
