Coffee

Came across this place last week when I was walking Marty. What drew me in to the front door that doesn’t scream coffee shop, were the hours. This place opens early in the morning. Like East Coast early. The coffee is good. It’s got a nice vibe, and it moved onto my list of places I will be back to.

Parking: Don’t know if the parking on the street was free or not because I parked in the parking lot. That was free.

Kid-friendliness: Typical of any coffee shop in the city.

Wheelchair accessibility: It’s a little, narrow inside, but certainly doable. Also, for a wheelchair you want to enter on the 4th Street side, right in the middle of the building. The corner door has stairs that would be difficult.

The coffee here is superb and they make their coffee with such care. I love their cold brew infusions and here is a photo of a oat milk latte with a heart and the campfire mocha 👌

Unfortunately, our visit to the 4s Ranch location today left an unpleasant impression. A tall girl with dark hair from the staff was very rude and unfriendly. She behaved harshly and made a few unwarranted remarks to the children, which spoiled our mood and the experience of the place. It would be nice if employees understood that they create the coffee shops’ atmosphere and treated visitors with respect.

VERY HONEST FRIENDLY REVIEW!

I have many concerns to address, with the main issues being:

1. Customer Service - This has been the worst experience I've had so far (sorry). There are 4-5 people working, yet it takes 15-20 minutes to receive just one coffee order. Imagine having only a 10-minute break to grab coffee! They often chat among themselves and take too long to pour milk. I've been to coffee shops with only one barista, and I have no complaints at all.

2. No Pastries - There are no pastries available.
If there is , may only 1 or 2 options.

3. Expensive - The prices are quite high.

4. Seasonal Drinks - They should offer seasonal drinks as well not just specials .

In my opinion, the owner should consider letting go of some employees and retaining baristas who are skilled and have a sense of urgency.

Amazing place with amazing vibe. 100% recommend whatever they have on their seasonal menu. The Ube Crème Brûlée Late was perfectly paired with free WiFi and a quiet but vibey place to work. Titus was a great shift lead. 10/10 recommend.

My favorite local coffee chain! All of the drinks are very original and very good. Some of them could use a tiny bit more syrup so you may want to ask for a bit extra, but it is just so good. Thank you so very much!

They changed the matcha and it’s really bad. Me and all my friends used to come here all the time, they had a great matcha but recently changed it to a presweetened matcha. It taste like melted ice cream it’s so sweet and hardly even tastes like matcha. We’re so disappointed, we used to come here weekly but just can’t anymore. Really bummed about it, idk why they would change it, it was one of their most popular items.

I recently visited this trendy coffee spot, and it was such a great experience! The design of the space is modern and inviting. Watching the baristas make the coffee was lovely – you can tell they really care about the craft. Their homemade syrups and latte flavors take the drinks to another level, and I tried the lavender latte, which was smooth, creamy, and perfectly balanced. It’s hard to find a spot that nails both the atmosphere and the coffee, but this place definitely does!

Good intentions, coffee is average. Staff were unkind in my experience. But they seemed to be very kind to royal costumes.

After visiting Mostra Coffee on 4th Avenue in San Diego multiple times, I feel compelled to share my experience. While the coffee here is decent overall, I believe the quality should be more consistent. As a regular macchiato drinker, I’ve noticed that only one out of the 5-6 rotating baristas consistently makes a great macchiato. It’s surprising and frustrating that the quality of the espresso can vary so much depending on who is behind the counter, especially since they all have the same ingredients to work with. This inconsistency is disappointing and detracts from the experience.

Additionally, I’m not a fan of their drip coffee. Mostra Coffee emphasizes single-origin beans, which often have a higher acidity. Personally, I prefer a darker roast, so the drip coffee here doesn’t quite suit my taste. However, I understand that this is subjective and might appeal to those who enjoy more acidic brews.

My biggest concern, though, is their use of paper cups, even for customers who choose to stay and enjoy their coffee on-site. This change, likely implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly reduces the coffee experience. As someone who particularly enjoys espresso, the thought of it being served in a paper cup was off-putting enough that I didn’t even dare to order it. Espresso cools down quickly in a paper cup, becoming bitter and more acidic, which is far from ideal. For a café that charges premium prices, this is unacceptable. The experience of drinking espresso or any other coffee is diminished when it isn’t served in a proper cup.

Given that Mostra Coffee overlooks 4th Avenue, offering a pleasant view when the windows are open, it’s a shame that the coffee experience inside doesn’t fully match the setting. The inconsistency in drink preparation, the varying quality of the beans, and the use of paper cups all detract from what could be a top-notch café experience. For the premium prices they charge, customers deserve better. It’s time for Mostra Coffee to reconsider some of these choices and offer an experience that truly reflects the quality they aspire to provide.
