We LOVE this place so much! Whenever we are in SD we have to have lunch here! Our go-to is the pork tonkatsu plate and the agedashi tofu. On point...

I love going to this grocery store… But I don’t think that this restaurant is up to par with other restaurants in the area. I went to both of Mitsuwa’s restaurants and got a aburi chasiu bowl from the other establishment - YUM!
From Musashiya, I ordered the Mini-Katsu Don bowl, and was disappointed. All of the breading fell off the meat - all of it! It was gross and nearly inedible. Basically what I got was a boiled chicken rice bowl topped with egg/breading clumps
Breading should not completely fall off, this is a sign of poor food handling &/or chef skills - both pretty important in a restaurant setting.
I was going to say something but the host didn’t really give off hospitable vibes from the get-go.
For example,
When I got my food, I noticed there was no spoon for the included miso (one positive thing about the katsu don is that it comes with Miso soup), I asked the host if I may have a spoon and they told me people usually drink from the cup and was seemingly-reluctant to grab a spoon for my meal… I may be reading into it. But I felt like I was a burden to the staff, asking for a spoon when served a soup.
Rather than alerting the staff about my observations, I simply will not go there anymore.
The value perhaps would have been amazing if the Katsu Don was prepared properly.

This review is for just the udon as I've never tried anything else: This has been my go to spot for udon ever since my childhood udon spot sold out. Unfortunately, Musashiya has raised their prices (forgivable on its own) and as of late the broth has an undeniable flavor of tap water. Under these circumstances when I have a craving for wet noodles I'm just going to go get Pho. Sad to see another udon spot rendered not worth the price or detour.
The tempura is always top notch and has saved them from a 1 star review.

Last week 7/19/2024, was the worst staff and service, I have ever experienced. I will not definitely come back and also advise customers to think twice going to this place unless they hire a mature , considerate staff. That night bunch of kids working and obviously, could care less. It was only 6:30pm, they close at 8pm, but they stopped taking order because they run out of rice. An Asian Japanese restaurant running out of rice. The kids messed up my order and offered to refund me. Ok, I was refunded but today I checked my charge on my account, they reversed the charge. Not only they have a terrible service, they are even robbing their customers! SHAME ON YOU. If you promise to refund due to bad service and in correct order, don't try to take back the charge! Keep giving this kind of service, and I know you will not be around any longer for business due to your bad business practice and customer service!

Yuzu soba or udon always great here, nice and refreshing chewy firm bites with satisfying portions. Love the convenience of an easy meal next to a quick grocery stop.

I got the Katsu Teishoku but the meat was a bit overcooked. The breading was so greasy that I ended up just eating the meat without the breading.

Quick and easy bites, this is the place to be. Unfortunately, the food was not up to par. I ordered the Mini Katsudon, but the pork was rubbery and flavorless. The breading did not stick to the pork in an ideal way and just completely fell off the pork. The egg was both undercooked and overcooked; it was clear and raw but also overcooked. Sadly, the experience was not ideal.

Gave me the wrong type of noodle and forgot half my order.
Ordered shrimp & vegetables tempuras noodle soup. There were few customers. It took ~20min before the soup ready. The vegi tempuras were raw and the shrimps tiny. The soup was a diluted soy sauce and very salty. So basically you’ll expect to get som noodles in soy sauce.

Quite a departure from what authentic Japanese food should taste like. They got names and mostly look of the food correct but the resemblance stops there.

I ordered shrimp kakiage udon. 2 pieces of kakiage. It's usually good. It feels like food in the service area. It's great that it's open even on Thanksgiving Day.
