Absolutely fantastic experience at Osteria Cotto e Mangiato! The service from Andrea (owner) was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Every dish we ordered was incredible-from the rich, comforting Carbonara w/anchovies to the Captain's Treasure chest is unexplainable good, everything was cooked to perfection. You can really taste the quality and care in each bite. This place is a gem in San Diego for anyone craving authentic Italian cuisine. Oh, by the way, did I mention the Tiramisu... WOW!! Can’t wait to come back!
Very very expensive for the serving size: food was very very good, but not worth going back again
Great service and delicious food. My husband's Italian and he gave it a big-time thumbs up. We'll go back again when we are back in San Diego.
We were very excited to try this restaurant as my husband is 100% Sicilian. We felt the food was average. Sauce was very creamy and heavy on my pasta. Tuna with caponata was good although sauce was sweeter than is traditional. We thought it strange that on the cocktail menu it listed the type of wine (Nero D'Avola) but did not say where it was from as is customary on most menus. Silverware was dirty which they replaced on request. Staff members very courteous and there was little wait time for food. There is a lot of outdoor seating which is nice.
I was so delighted by Osteria. It is tucked away from the main Little Italy. I liked that because it is quiet and allowed me to transport myself to Italy in my imagination. It is quaint. The Italian dishes are some of the best I've ever had, and the service is outstanding. I had eggplant boulienese. It melted in my mouth and I didn't want to stop eating it, but the serving size was enough for theee!! Their Italian dressing and my salad met my high expectations and I was so happy I took my friend there! I highly recommend Osteria. It is at 7th and Ash. And if you want to go to Balboa Park in the day and Osteria at night, they are not far away from each other!!
We had a lovely dinner at Cotto e Mangiato. We started with sharing a carafe of Sicilian Spritz. A real value as the pitcher is the price of two single spritz and you get a lot more than that! We shared the burrata salad which was really delicious. I had the rigatoni bolognese, which was delicious and my friend had the eggplant dish, which was also delicious. A great meal, overall.
The food was average. My partner ordered the gnocchi with the heated parmesan wheel. He liked it but I tasted the gnocchi and it was very doughy. I had a spaghetti dish and I know the pasta was not fresh made. The sauce was ok, but I've had much better elsewhere. I would not go there a second time.
The food and location were great but the service was pretty slow. I think we noticed more because we had a show to get.
Excellent first-time experience at Osteria Cotto e Mangiato! We had apps and a cocktail before a show at the theater. We tried the polpette, the beet salad and the truffle burrata caprese. All were delicious! Definitely a neighborhood gem.
Tasty as always and the nicest staff. The early bird 3 course meal is a great value but it is a lot of food. Come hungry!

We stayed at the Vacation Marriott downtown. This restaurant offers 10% up to $30 for guests. It is a short walk uphill 1 block. We made a reservation the night before and our table was ready. The cheese wheel was to die for. Two of us shared that. The lasagna was delicious, as were the rigatoni meals, pasta primavera, and seafood stew. The salmon with vegetables was also perfection. We ordered two side salads and shared amongst all 8 of us. Charming ambiance and fun and efficient service. We enjoyed a bottle of wine amongst 6 of us and ordered a garlic and regular bread which was 8 slices- the perfect amount with such rich meals. From the moment we arrived to being seated and when leaving, all staff were friendly and attentive. We all agreed a top 10 dining experience.
Love everything about this place! Andrea, the owner is fantastic. Love his story and his journey. The food, service and atmosphere are equally amazing!!! Great neighborhood resturant. Wish him all the best!
The food was very good.... service was not! Very unorganized staff - maybe a manager or owner should be involved
I discovered Osteria Cotto e Mangiato on Open Table. We were so pleasantly surprised when we walked up - it was charming. We sat inside which was very Italian, cozy and fun. We ordered a Caesar salad which was huge, shareable and beautifully presented. Then we ordered the pasta prepared in the gigantic wheel of Parmesan! We had gnocchi and fettuccine with mushrooms and truffle oil. It was SO cool and SO delicious! Pricey but it was a date night for us and we thoroughly enjoyed savoring each bite. And we have quite a bit leftover! Yum!!! Definitely recommend Osteria and we will be back!
Service was outstanding. But food was horrid! I had chicken Marsala and it clearly wasn't Marsala. It was a white/gravy sauce that has absolutely no taste and certainly no infusion of Marsala. My sister had risotto with scallops. Very disappointing. While each dish should have had different flavors they tasted exactly the same. This restaurant had high reviews. Very misleading and disappointing. The first clue should have been arriving to the restaurant at 6:40 on a Thursday and the restaurant was empty. That is NOT a good sign
