The food was good and had very large portions however the location of this place did not feel safe. It was located inside an apartment complex and I was very concerned about leaving my car parked on the street. Other than that, food was good.

Super awesome place, I’m not vegan but this food blew my mind and was better than most non vegan restaurants. The Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese had a huggggggggeeeeee portion and I don’t know if that typical or a fluke but either way a lot of good food for me!

We got the buffalo chickin mac and cheese, which honestly was the BEST mac and cheese ive ever had. It was very creamy, and savory. We also got the ranch burger. Also very delicious, and the portions were very generous. 120% recommend this place.

Food was cold. Waiter did not tell us that there was a $3 up charge for sweet potato fries. Place was good not great. Big portions. We ordered mac and cheese baseballs, pulled pork burger, and nachos. 6 out of 10 in food taste. Food quality 4 out of 10. The cheese was ice cold and the staff disputed that was normal. The sweet potato fries were barely warm. The chips in the nachos were stale. $45 for nachos, mac and cheese balls and a pulled pork sandwich, never going here again. Calling a spade a spade no embellishments.

Outstanding food. As a meat eater I was very surprised at the way the substitutions tasted. I got the Louisiana chicken with mashed potatoes. It was a little bland which is why I didn't give the fifth star but texture was so good and it tasted like I was eating chicken. My wife got the burger with bacon (vegetarian obviously) and I will say it's the best non meat burger I have had. Better than many real burgers. The barbecue sauce was the star of the show for sure. The location of the place was a little strange in that we parked on the street and had to walk around "back" to the courtyard and it almost looked like the place was closed. They weren't obviously and gave us a menu to order from. They take call ins and orders at the counter, you can't order online so just know that going in. Great place though that I would like to try again and grab something else. (Probably the burger)

They did not disappoint. I originally visited their Vegas location and was hooked. Finding their Cali location I was excited. They're very consistent with food. My friend who isn't vegan loved the food as well. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I love it here!

The website doesn't have pricing, & we called to place an order. After placing the order over the phone, the lady took my card number. I asked for a total price, and what she gave me was higher than expected, so I asked if we could take one thing off. She said that she couldn't give me a refund no matter what. When I argued that we weren't given a total before and that she ran my card really quickly, she still couldn't give me a refund. We debated whether or not to dispute it with my bank or go get the food-- This was such a bizarre experience, and I'd never had anything like this happened before. After calling my bank, we still decided to go to see what happened. To our surprise, she had given us a cash refund for the appetizer and still included it in our meal. That was nice, so we were satisfied. She said to check the pricing before next time, which is a valid point to make, but at the same time it's a bit ridiculous to not tell us our total AND to not have pricing online, AND be unable to give refunds. It also would've been nice if she could've let us know she'd refund us when we got there instead of saying nothing... The food was so good that it changed our negative mindset of the place. Great vegan food--appetizer, entrees, and desserts. 3 stars for that debacle and the prices: I will never pay $18 for a hot dog again. A great place if you're rich or looking to splurge on some vegan comfort food!
My partner and I came to the Modern Vegan a few weeks ago and I was so surprised with how much I enjoyed their food! (I eat meat, my partner is the vegan.)The fish n chips tasted like actual fish, I was blown away! This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego! We'll definitely be coming back!

First of all, I truly like the happy customer service here. Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it does not taste good. TMV does vegan junk food really well. Recommend: Jalapeno poppers: thick crispy, gold crust over soft jalapenos that burst with cheese when you bite into them Crab cakes: creative and I think these taste better then real crab cakes. The mustard remoulade it is served with is tasty too. Veg Green Coconut curry: so comforting on a cold day. Loaded with veggies. Lobster melt: Hearts of palm substitutes for the expensive lobster. The texture is less chewy than lobster. This dish is savory indeed. A nice vegan alternative. It is North Park, so street parking. The entrance is in the back. It looks like you are entering an atrium to an apartment complex, but really you're going to find the entrance there. Gotta come back to try the desserts!

Had to come here during a visit to SD! Holy moly so good!!! And the day we came they had BOGO martinis! Breakfast burrito was amazing and so was their pulled pork sammich. 10/10. Only thing is we didn't feel far enough from other tables with the whole social distancing thing. Will definitely come back when in the area. Most likely for takeout tho.

Fantastic spot with excellent takeout options. The kind of vegan food that sticks to your ribs. They have the healthy stuff of course, but if you really want to treat yourself as a vegan, The Modern Vegan is the place to go!

Tried this place because I'm both gluten & dairy free-- I didn't realize everything was vegan including the meat. But makes sense. I had the cheese fries and they were soooo good I ate all of them. This actually became my meal. I also ordered the gf noodle but they were level 10 Spicy. The waitress was nice and asked if I wanted to swap or get a "milk" shake but I declined because I was full off the "cheese" fries. Which had potatoes, carrot and something else. Very good. My mom had the fake fish tacos. She was intrigued because she couldn't imagine fake fish. Haha. She enjoyed them. Large menu, higher prices for the ingredients, nice staff & distance between tables. Overall good experience.
