Make reservations! This is a popular restaurant and for good reason. The food is excellent, as is the service. Get the Cioppino and order extra garlic bread. You're going to need it!

My favorite Cioppino in the entire world. It's a tradition for use when in San Francisco. I highly recommend it.

Their service was very accommodating and friendly. Also their food was excellent. I wish I could learn how to make their Cioppino so that I could make it at home!!! So good!! We waited about an hour with my 6 year old nephew, he said it was more than worth it! And I agree!

We arrived during the peak weekend dinner time and waited over an hour, but it was worth it. We had a small cioppino, mussels, garlic bread, and clam chowder. It was enough food for two adults and a small child.

The mussels and the broth were delicious, which the yummy bread soaked up beautifully.

Cioppino was well-spiced with a hint of grassy herbaceousness. The crab in it was large and full of juicy meat, which was super fun to crack and eat. Because of how strongly it was seasoned though, other smaller seafood ingredients like mussels, shrimp, and clams were a bit buried in the rich flavors of the sauce.

Wouldn’t strongly recommend the chowder. It was okay but nothing remarkable. I’d rather have more of their scrumptious garlic bread.

The service was also attentive, and the staff members were lovely!

Would definitely return.

5 stars all around. We got the clams and the cioppino. Can't wait to go back.

The wait may take a bit but it's worth it.

Delicious. Good stuff. Scallops from specials were amazing. Main famous dish (on photo) was really big (even small one size).

I suspect this restaurant got, and kept, its reviews because a) the food used to be stellar and b) long time customers feel a great deal of nostalgia when they visit. I went with a friend for lunch - there was a small waiting line (2 people), so it wasn't horrendously busy.
The wait staff were lovely. The atmosphere, ditto. We were ready to enjoy ourselves! We shared two dozen oysters, a variety of choices. I have to say, as someone who loves oysters beyond measure, that these were... okay. Two of them could have done with some cleaning, the slight taste of sewage was enough to put us both off.
We were very excited about the dungeness crab soup, on special that day. Since one of us is highly allergic to "fake crab" (surimi, krabstick, and a host of other deceptive names!) they decided to ask the waiter if it was all real crab in the soup. The other objected, saying "It's the Anchor Bar. Of course it's real crab!" After explaining to the wait person that if there was any fake crab in the soup, they'd need to go to the hospital, we were told that it was "half and half". Half fake crab and half real. Serious? At Anchor Bar?
It made us afraid to try the crab cakes, or the crabmeat salad. After making sure it was all real, we settled on splitting a cioppino, which outgoing customers had told us was fantastic. It was all right, though my companion muttered "it's a waste of good crab and shrimp, covering it up with this".
The bill was reasonable, particularly for the area and city, but the restaurant was really a disappointment.

Came by for a late lunch while visiting San Francisco to find a sign saying closed for staff vacation after traveling across the city to just eat there
