Great restaurant! Can't wait to go back! Took a vegetarian friend for her birthday and had a wonderful meal. we started with the Winter Chicory Salad and an order of the Petite Rye & Smetana Butter--the salad hit all the right notes with it's citrus-y dressing; the home-made rye bread was great (the smetana butter could have had a bit less salt...) Then we had the Crispy Zrazi--this wonderful potato/lentil dish stole the show! The Wild Mushroom Stroganoff was delicious (and so rich, I would suggest sharing...). Two baked rye doughnuts & caramel sauce were brought to the table with a birthday candle for dessert. Service was perfect--we enjoyed the entire experience. I can't wait to go back and try some of the non-vegetarian options--which i will have to have with the crispy zrazi. The brunch menu looks awesome, too.......

It is very pleasant and very satisfying to arrive at a place where they serve you with that professionalism with which the staff of this beautiful restaurant treat you and I mention this because I have had the opportunity to go to different four or five star restaurants but they serve you in a normal but here they serve you in a very professional manner, educated and very knowledgeable about everything, offering you every detail of each meal as well as the knowledge of each wine that they give you every detail.. it is impressive. I thank each of the staff who works in that special place, the owner is a very very nice, humanitarian and very charismatic professional person.. my wife and I were impressed BIRCH &RYEIt is very pleasant and very satisfying to arrive at a place where they serve you with that professionalism with which the staff of this beautiful restaurant treats you and I mention it because I have had the opportunity to go to different four or five star restaurants but they serve you normally but here they serve you in a very professional manner, polite and very knowledgeable about everything, offering you every detail of each meal as well as the knowledge of each wine that they provide you with every detail... it is impressive, I am impressed... Enjoyed our vegan tasting menu here last weekend. Perhaps some adjustment to the Chicory salad, as half way thru that dish, the flavor felt sour. Good service, nice restaurant . The negative part of our experience- the bathroom has a malfunction flush, with a note on it.

I'm not one to write negative reviews but 6 of us went to Birch & Rye for dinner on a Friday night. To start all the doors were open and it was freezing. Then the drinks were pretty terrible and it took forever to get our orders taken. I really feel our sever either trained or just didn't get timing of a meal. My dish of the squash was dry and felt like it had been sitting for hours and reheated. Several of my friends ordered the duck and again everyone felt it was dry and had been preparing earlier and reheated...I could go on and on and I heard such great things. Maybe we hit it on a bad night but unfortunately we won't be back 6 people over $800.00... no dessert we could leave fast enough ...a shame

First time there. Never felt rushed. Service was excellent. Loved the creative and tasty menu choices. The bacon was revelatory! I'm ruined for eating it anywhere else! We'll definitely come back soon.

Such a unique dining experience. Food was delicious - we loved the borscht and the caviar service was divine! A pleasure to dine at the only Michelin-guide recognized Russian restaurant in the country!

Over hyped. The service was (I believe) the worst I’ve ever experienced in SF.There was chaos in the kitchen, our food arrived at least 45 minutes after we ordered (the starters). We’ve asked for the sauces to be on the side, twice… they made a mistake twice and got the sauce in (we had a lactose intolerant person….)The waitress had no clue what the ingredients in the food are - so we had to google….The kitchen was so chaotic that it felt like our food wouldn’t arrive. At the end mid service we decided to leave and go to another restaurant after spending almost 2.5 hours waiting for our dishes….Really disappointing given the hype and the Michelin star. Defo not worth it.

Breakfast egg, bacon and duck fat potatoes: under-cooked, greasy, bland potatoes with a small cardboard-looking/tasting, fried egg and fatty bacon was an embarrassment on a plate. Not kidding! The vodka infused salmon was delicious and the size of a very tiny appetizer ($23). Ridiculous!!! The $16 drink was good but not great. The Syrniki dessert was a small serving of deliciousness. The two comped doughnuts were served to us since we were celebrating a Birthday and were much appreciated since it filled us a bit more. I will not be back and do not recommend BandR to others. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was pleasant but a bit hovering. Not deserving of a future Michelin star and not likely to succeed in our current economic climate unless the food improves and the portions, become more generous.. A very disappointing $130 brunch, indeed.

This might have been the worse dining experience I have ever had. Not sure what was going on but the kitchen was completely dysfunctional serving the wrong dishes. The waiting staff was out of their element

Had the vegan tasting menu. While the food was creative and new, the service was a little lacking... especially for the price. They forgot about us on our fourth and fifth course. They realized the error and comped us a drink and app but for the level of dining experience they're trying to provide the lack of attentiveness was glaringly amiss.

This is the 4th time I've eaten here and I noticed a significant change in the menu and service. It is still good but it wasn't the spectacular experience I've had in the past. I would still recommend Birch and Rye but I would think twice about celebrating a special occassion here.

I went with my girlfriend and it was great.I liked it because the atmosphere was very nice and the facilities were luxurious! The food was delicious too. All the staff were friendly and pleasant.I think it would be great for coming with family or lovers, or for a celebration party.

Birch and Rye offers a delightful journey into Russian cuisine. The ambiance is charming, and the staff is very attentive. From classic borscht to savory caviar flight with bilinis; each dish is a flavorful. What an authentic and tasteful experience; we had a wonderful time.
