I don’t know what happened to this place, it was one of the first bars I went to when moving to San Francisco over a decade ago while the novelty of a speak easy still felt fresh.
But recently visiting a little later at night than usual, with a short notice reservation, the whole thing was just off.
The staff were a bit curt and felt like they didn’t want any customers at 12:30 (they say they close at 2:00)
Last call was at 1:13 and we were barely through our first drink, we only came for one which is fine, but 1:13 lights are up and we were more than suggested to take our drinks next door which killed the atmosphere and the entire point of being there.

Absolutely lovely, really gave you a sense of atmosphere and vibe. From the menu to the staff it really tied the experience together. We tried a nice spread of the cocktails and failed find one that didn't satisfy. I would definitely recommend for anyone in the area.

Music was a great mix: Leadbelly, Nina Simone, Skip James. Server was knowledgeable about the spirits and the music! The password thing is a little hokey especially since you need a reservation anyway, but loved the cocktails!

Very cool experience; everyone on staff was dedicated to the theme…there are house rules that they are pretty insistent about you following, but if you understand the concept; you’ll appreciate how they add to the ambiance.
I was there the day after Halloween so they said it was slower than normal…service was exemplary from door man to bartender. The bartenders were very knowledgeable, friendly and super willing and able to discuss or make every cocktail from their extensive catalogue! 5/5 recommend for an old school cocktail lover

We turned on a phone flashlight to help a friend read the menu. We were talking when the waitress walked up. She said "excuse me I'm talking!" and accused us of taking pictures. We explained it was just a flashlight. We weren't ready to order so she left. A few minutes later the manger arrives and tells us the waitress said we were taking pictures. We again explain it was just a flashlight. He tells us we can't harass the waitress. We try to explain it was just a flashlight. The place is half empty. The vibe is ruined. We left. Their loss. We had a lot of money to spend. Cocktails looked good on paper. Won't return given the service.
