Wako was surely one of, if not, the finest sushi dinner I've had in San Francisco. Just exquisite fish, flavors, and presentation. The appetizers and surrounding dishes of the Omikase were very excellent as well. But if you just want the sushi, the sushi tasting is a better value. You get the same number of pieces of sushi for less money.
Always a must when visiting San Francisco to have reservations at this restaurant. The Omakase or sushi tasting are both amazing explosions of flavor with every piece. Extremely recommend trying this place.
We did one omakase and one tasting menu (the only difference is that the omakase includes an uni sashimi and tamago). I am not a wasabi fan so I asked for no wasabi in my dishes. For each dish, the waitress describes the ingredients and how it was cooked, and also how each dish is meant to be eaten. The appetizers are delicious; I loved the deep fried sweetfish appetizer as well as the mushroom soup. The sashimi of course is incredible, no surprises there. The noise level is perfect, quiet to moderate. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
Fantastic omakase. Can't complain. Lower score on value because this will set you back! Three people, bottle of white wine ($75), tax, SF health mandate, and 18% tip equals $630 bill. Bon Appetite!
Came for the $95 sushi tasting menu and was not disappointed. The fish quality was superb and melted in your mouth. Our sushi chef was excellent at his job and presented the dishes beautifully. Servers were attentive and treated us well. If you're looking for someplace nice for a special occasion, I would say Wako is definitely worth the price for the quality and experience you get.
It was a phenomenal experience. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate his graduation and we both decided on the omakase. Small bites of food the entire time. If you eat a lot, you probably won't be full, but overall a decent amount of food for me.
I was raised in Japan and have had a lot of authentic sushi experiences there. Wako is definitely one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to. Tomo-san is very friendly and engaged and I had a lovely time. I would absolutely recommend Wako to all my sushi-loving friends!!
Wonderful fresh sushi flown in. Sat at the counter and had wonderful interaction with chef. Had the Wako Omakaze menu that combines both hot dishes/appetizers with the fresh sushi. All the food was wonderful and a definite place to return to! The restaurant is quite cozy so definitely will need to reserve in advance.
This is specific to my experience. I couldn't eat tuna and they accommodated a substitution, however they replaced the most expensive fish on the menu and finisher of the omakase (tuna belly) with some cheap chewy white fish (half the price). I would have expected the wagyu (same price à la carte as the tuna). This eclipsed all the great dishes from before. Just did not make any sense to finish on a lumberjack, especially for a place that also has transparent a la carte pricing. Will likely come back but definitely leaving on a sour note today
The menu was very good, rlly love the environment and set up. Enjoyed the food and the hang out. The downside is that. Me and my friend wasn't full in the end, and was hoping there was dessert. And usually there was someone that held the door for us, but prolly cuz the store was tiny there wasn't a lot of space for another person to stand next to the door all the time. Overall great experience. Would come again.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed the 10 course tasting. The chef was very friendly and I loved his explanations of everything. This is a must try place if you are in the mood for some real authentic sushi. The selections were very diverse!
Each bite was perfectly seasoned, each fish was freshest of fresh, if I was rich I would have got everything on the menu. We focused on ngiri and the fatty tuna roll and were not disappointed.
My wife and I frequented Wako many times in the past when we still lived in San Francisco and always had a good time. We were back in town for the week and wanted to take our relatives to one of our favorite Omakase. Because reservations for Wako tend to go fast, and due to the limitations on Opentable; my wife, myself and sister-in-law all booked separate reservations in an effort to secure seats for the same time. We knew there was a good chance we would not be seated together and did not mind. Upon entering the restaurant, we were “greeted” by one of their hostess / waitress (the taller lady of the three women present that evening). Before being given the opportunity to explain that we did not mind not sitting together (being that one of our reservations was for a table, while two were for the counter), the waitress scolded us for not having called to make our reservations instead. With the attention of the entire restaurant now on us, our dinner began on an awkward start. Had she explained this to us in a more polite manner, I frankly would not be writing this review. So much for welcoming your patrons with “open arms and communal spirit.” However, as the evening went on, and as we filled ourselves up with beer, sake and sushi, almost all of that would be forgiven. Nakamura san and the other chef would turn our night around with their hospitality and warm demeanor. All in all, will we return? Sure.
First time back since the pandemic, the food is as good as what I fondly remember. It is unusual in the inflationary environment that their current version of sushi tasting at $98 is a scaled down version of pre-pandemic omakase. Not cheap but good value in my opinion.
It's an amazing restaurant with fine-quality of food and service. It's hard to find good sushi restaurants that serve authentic sushi with blue-fin tuna and other fresh fish. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would come again.
