My experience at Chutney Restaurant was not the most pleasant. The food is generally normal, but the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The neighborhood around looks unsafe - there are a lot of homeless people on the street, and you feel uncomfortable because of it. In addition, there is an unpleasant smell near the restaurant, which also spoils the impression. Inside, the situation is quite simple, without comfort. Unfortunately, I don't want to come back here because of the environment.

I went to Chutney with a friend recently and was absolutely delighted. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and branded biryani — the meat is perfectly marinated, the spices are bright and balanced, the portions are large, you can safely share. The atmosphere is simple and cozy, the staff is polite and fast — you can see that they are cooking according to real recipes. Excellent price/quality ratio for San Francisco, I will definitely be back.
I'm never going to eat there again.I found fingernails in the food

We searched restaurant, and on basis of review and rating we decided to go to this restaurant. Food order to be given at counter by self. We order paneer dish and order came on time. But when we ate paneer, it was some unusual taste, something different, we tried to cut paneer pieces but it was difficult to cut. My son was also with me, when he tried to cut second paneer piece, he couldn't cut that. When we cut paneer pieces which was little larger in size, center or cut piece was irregular BLACKISH BRWONISH COLOUR PANEER. We feel unpleasent to see this. We called the person at reception who was just passing by. We asked him what is this? We mentioned its difficult to cut paneer. He explained, pneer is marineated and thats why black from inside. He cut one piece with more pressure, but was unable to cut another piece of paneer with maximum force.
He said it may happen, we objected paneer should not be like this, this was ROTTEN and possibly kept frozen for WEEKS.
The owner or whoever that person was arrogant, and didn't listen, didnt apologized, and didnt changed the dish, he said, this is ok, may happen sometime. We were not satisfied, he not saying truth, we know that and we can see that.
We had arguments, I said should make a complaint of this, owner become irritated and said go ahead, go ahead, make a complain.
We were very upset, as we already ate part of some paneer dish. We left remaining items. Just ate naan.
That person height was about 5 feet 10 inch, looks fair complexion, looks like like restaurant owner and educated but behavior was very bad.
At end we went at reception to pay, owner offered us 2 dollar discount on bills.
But I refused to accept any discount and paid full amount.
Even at reception owner was critiquing me that I should not say , what is this?
I should request him to change with something else. This is very bad
Owner providing bad quality rotten paneer to customers, not saying sorry, not apologized, and proving their clients are wrong. He said, so many desi came here.
I said will take action, I will do something.
He didnt give us bill themselves. I asked for bill then he given us some print which have amount only. May be Knowingly he didnt mentioned restaurant name of chatting government for not paying taxes.
I will say, never visit this restaurant if you care for your health.
Many time I felt like vomiting, and feel unpleasant whenever I remember this episode, very unpleasant both food quality and owners behavior.

Been coming here for over 17 years, excellent food, and still affordable thank goodness 💕
Recommended dishes: Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan
I waited more than 1 hour for the food, which was very disappointing. The food itself was okay, not that good, and didn’t really meet my expectations after such a long wait.
On the positive side, the prices are reasonable, which is a good point.
Overall, the service time really needs improvement.

Best Indian food in San Francisco. I have been coming here since 20 years ago, and it is still the same fantastic taste and great prices. Now I live in Utah and every time I visit San Francisco I go there with my family and kids. A must try restaurant.

I’m a huge fan of Chutney Restaurant. I always order the Chicken Tikka Masala, and it’s consistently delicious — creamy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I’ve tried many Indian restaurants around San Francisco, but Chutney truly stands out. The food quality, taste, and portion sizes are all amazing. Definitely my favorite Indian restaurant in the city!
