Go somewhere else if you want cheaper egg tarts that taste better than this establishment. I've been here before, and the number of people lining up for expensive egg tarts that can be comparable to Oakland's Chinatown bakeries is not worth it, and thank God I didn't even buy one since I saw those prices for just one. Don't fall for the hype and the news outlets that praised this bakery before.

The egg tarts are truly worth the hype. Custard had just the right amount of chew and the tart crust was flaky yet sturdy. They’re made to order so they’re best if eaten immediately. And the grandma was so kind and sweet!

My only gripe was older locals cutting to the front of the line. But it is what it is.

I haven’t tried the famous egg tart from the legendary Golden Gate Bakery, even after marrying my roommate, who grew up in the Bay Area for more than 8 years. The custard tart from Golden Gate Bakery is $3.75, which is a little pricey, and it's not my type, so we won't revisit again.

Cash Only and the ladies are friendly...said to call them to checked .

Here goes.......Finally!!! After multiple times getting here and it being closed...last week,NO lines before 5pm...I would say...a solid 8.5 out of 10. Maybe if it came straight out of the oven..I would give it a 9...why not a 10?? Because I don't feel that I have eaten enough egg tart to be an expert ...that being said..I liked King Pineapple Egg Tart slightly better in over all ...though if you like that egg tastes..Golden Gate Bakery is slightly better...I just happened to like King's crust or outer layer more.

The hype around egg custard tart from Golden Gate Bakery is real. People patiently lined up in the weather for the chance to purchase these gems. There is no real set time when the bakery is open, nor is there anything else you can purchase at the bakery. You do not even get to enter the bakery. You know the bakery is open when the steel gates are slightly pulled apart to show the bakery door. It is cash only, therefore, be prepared ahead of time. Don't wait in line for 30 minutes to get rejected when it's your turn.

The suggested method of eating is when you get the tart. It is hot, and the crust is flaky. The crust reminds me of a croissant. The tart has a nice sweetness that is not overwhelming. I do taste a hint of eggs, but no tartness. It was good in my books and I would eat again.

If in SF, give it a whirl if you have time. The hype is iconic in its own rights, and the tart is not bad either. Enjoy.

BTW, I had a few leftover that I put in the refrigerator, and the next day, I warmed them in the microwave for 20 secs. Enough to warm the custard and not make the crust soft. The tart was still good.
