While exploring San Francisco, we were thrilled to discover a Nepalese restaurant nearby. Our excitement was shared by our 3-year-old son, who was eagerly looking forward to the food. We arrived for lunch around 3 pm, but unfortunately, our experience was marred by slow and sloppy service.

After waiting for about 15 minutes, we were served complimentary papads. However, our actual order took a staggering 45 minutes to arrive, causing our hungry son to become extremely cranky, and we adults felt the same. The service was disappointingly slow and lacked efficiency.

For our meal, we ordered Veg Momo, Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Thukpa, and Dhido. We requested medium spiciness, but it wasn’t enough for us. The Veg Momos were decent in taste, but the Chowmein and Thukpa were rather bland. We had high hopes for the street-style flavor of the Chowmein, but it fell short. Additionally, the soup lacked flavor.

To our surprise, instead of receiving Dhido, we were served Thakali Thali. When we inquired, we were informed that Dhido would take an additional 15 minutes, but we couldn't wait any longer, so we settled for the Thali. Fortunately, the Thali had a good taste. However, the portion of rice provided with the Thali was insufficient, so we had to order more.

As a final disappointment, we ordered Samosa Chaat as a to-go order, but were surprised to find only 2 Samosas in the box. It was another instance of sloppy service and a failure to accurately fulfill our order.

Overall, our experience at the restaurant left us feeling highly disappointed. The slow service, lackluster flavors, and errors in fulfilling our order contributed to our dissatisfaction.

What a great dinner we just had at Gurung! We were 5 for dinner and all loved our dishes. And the gluten free naan was excellent too. We had the shrimp vinderoo, excellent, butter chicken, and chicken and goat biriyani.. all excellent. The new owners are really nice and doing a wonderful job.

Gurung Kitchen is my go to spot for authentic Nepali food! Their pork jeer and Bhutan are incredible so flavorful and comforting. The thali is also really nice, with a perfect mix of dishes that showcase authentic Nepali flavors.

The food and service here are excellent! We tried the chatpate, which was served in a charming cone-shaped dish that reminded me of Nepal, where chatpate is often served in newspaper cones. The taste was fantastic. We also had momo and chowmein.

The momo was made with hand-rolled dough, which I prefer over premade or machine-rolled wrappers. The momo achar was flavorful but a bit thick—it could benefit from a little added water. The chowmein was delicious and very similar to what you’d find in local restaurants in Nepal. The portion size was just right and was served with the same momo achar.

One minor issue was the sticky floors near the restroom area, likely due to the open kitchen doors and cooking oil.

I would definitely return! On my first visit, I brought my parents, and they loved the Dhido Thali set.

Crappy food all around. Who puts sweet and sour sauce on momos? Gross.

Based on the food itself I'd say it is the best Nepali restaurant in the bay area. I have been to 15+ Nepali restaurants in the area and none of them come even close to Gurung kitchen. Hope they can maintain this as it grows. Highly recommend. Momo, Choila, Sukuti were all really good. Will try other dishes in our next visit.
