Food and service were great as usual. We were done in time for the opera as usual. Being seated near the kitchen was a bit noisy. Complements to the bartender.
Simply, classic! The best and hasn't slipped a bit. My only complaint was they ran out of swordfish. Not to worry, I'll be back soon and have the goat cheese salad again! Thank you'
Servers and staff were quite rude and seemed to prefer serving white customers over people of color. We had a reservation, came on time, and were first in line, but they sat every other white customer behind us in the line, before they even addressed us. When they finally gave us a table, it was dirty, with unwashed utensils. When trying to get staff's attention, they'd look at us, smile, and go serve another white customer instead. We had to wait 30 minutes just for them to give us the bill. Won't be coming back.
Fresh fish was excellent but one grilled fish was undercooked and needed to be put back on the grill.
This is a restaurant that is usually a trusted place for seafood, but this visit was not satisfying. Skate wing was on the menu which is not often available. It was prepared with cooked greens smothered on top. There was a lot of oil on the greens and fish which made the delicate flour coating and fish less palatable. Skate wing is a delicate fish and should have minimum preparation to enjoy.
On a Thursday night the restaurant was crowded and noisy. Tables including mine too close to other tables. The oysters on the half shell were good, the swordfish fair and the French fries below average. I didn't stay for dessert I felt sorry for the aged waiter who hobbled around. He did a good job but seemed past the age of retirement
I loved all of the seafood dishes and apps that we ate last night. I would go back there tonight if I could. The calamari was so tender and not over seasoned with dressing. The black cod was a melt-in-your mouth experience. The warm goat cheese salad had the right amount of cheese to lettuce and the toasted nuts provided the perfect texture. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the burnt cheesecake. I wanted the pavlova but my partner chose the cheesecake. It was non-traditional and I'm a traditional cheesecake lover. Doesn't matter. I still give the food 5 stars and will be back. The services was exceptional and the atmosphere was not crowded nor loud so I appreciated it very much.

First time at this historic restaurant what a wonderful meal. The broiled calamari was exceptional activating your taste buds. The paella was also amazing and the basque cheesecake is a must. Looking forward to visiting this landmark again.
I have been dining here for so many years now and the staff are always very gracious and kind. The problem is that the food really has to be seriously updated. I know that people like to eat things they are familiar with but now the cuisine is dated and boring.
Love the food! Love the people who serve us! Love everybody that works there!!!

Everything was top notch. Only complaint. It gets too hot when the place is full and buzzing.
We haven't been here in years. It is a shadow of what we remembered. Food was meh, apps uninteresting and desserts nothing special.
The grilled fish menu items were subpar to other SF restaurants in cut size, quality, and preparation. Surely this restaurant can do better. How about a vegetable side with the entree? Are things that hard up? Cocktail, appetizer and grilled fish were close to $100. Really?
HSG continues to be my go to restaurant prior to attending SF Symphony concerts. Consistently delicious food and always attentive wait staff. A+++ atmosphere.
Hayes street is consistently excellent. Their wait staff has been there forever. I have never had a bad meal.
