The chicken karaage tossed in sauce was great. The ramen was average and forgettable - the noodles just don’t have the bounce thick noodles should have. Service was basically non-existent because of QR code ordering and paying.

Tucked away in San Francisco's vibrant Union Square neighborhood, Hinodeya Ramen Bar is a Japanese eatery that serves up a variety of traditional dishes. With a stellar rating of 4.3 stars and over 600 reviews, I was eager to see if this ramen bar lived up to the hype.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a modern and welcoming atmosphere. However, I was surprised to find that there was no host or hostess to greet us immediately. Instead, we were instructed to make our reservation on a tablet, which seemed a bit impersonal. Fortunately, the wait was brief, and we were seated within 10 minutes.

The restaurant's compact size belies its cozy and intimate atmosphere, with tables for two or three people and a long communal table for larger groups.

Hinodeya Ramen Bar's menu boasts an impressive array of Japanese classics, from ramen to small plates. We opted to share several dishes, including Sukiyaki Beef Ramen, Takoyaki, Edamame, Gyoza, Yu-Lin-Chi, and Hinodeya Ramen.

While the food was certainly acceptable, it didn't particularly wow me. The ramen, while well-prepared, lacked a certain depth of flavor. The Takoyaki, on the other hand, was a highlight – crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, although I would have liked more octopus.

The Edamame was underwhelming, lacking flavor and texture. The Gyoza, while well-made, was lukewarm at best. The Yu-Lin-Chi, however, was a standout – a sweet and spicy sauce complemented the chicken perfectly.

We paired our meal with a Sapporo Premium Small beer and a Junmai sake. The beer was crisp and refreshing, while the sake was smooth and easy-drinking.

In conclusion, Hinodeya Ramen Bar is a solid, if unremarkable, Japanese eatery in the heart of San Francisco. While the food didn't blow me away, there were certainly some highlights. The service, while friendly, could benefit from a bit more polish.

Recommendation: If you're a Japanese food fan, Hinodeya Ramen Bar is worth a visit. However, temper your expectations – while the food is certainly acceptable, it's not particularly memorable.

They had two options for vegan ramen and plenty of appetizers. Loved the crispy kale!

I don't get the hype for *vegan* ramen. The broth is decent, crispy fried kale is yum, spice levels are additional add ons. Most importantly though: Why is the tofu sweet? Maybe that's just me but I don't get it, and there are no other tofu substitutions.

Sweet tofu definitely lowered the rating. I got the creamy vegan ramen fwiw.

When I go to America, the ramen soup is often sweet, and the soup at this restaurant is also sweet. Since you can choose the level of spiciness, I chose 3 spiciness. It was spicy, but the base was sweet, so it was still sweet. Still, it was a decent ramen with a Japanese quality feel to it. The beer was cold and delicious. The inside of the spring roll tastes like gyoza seeds, and it looks like it's fried like a spring roll. I recommend Shishito pepper. It was sweet and spicy, but it was perfect as a snack.
This time, I received Sapporo Premium Large (650ml), Vegetable Spring Roll (Vegan), Shishito Pepper (Vegan), and Spicy Miso Ramen (Level 3) Medium.
When you enter the store, read the menu using the QR code on the table, make your selection, set your tip, and pay. This is how the order is completed. Should I tip even though I haven't even eaten yet? I've seen some comments like that, but it's open until 3 a.m., it's in a convenient location, and if you think of it as a system usage fee, there's no problem.

I was today years old when i found out that tofu was a dessert. I added tofu to my order of spicy miso ramen and guess what? That thing did not look like the normal tofu i know and then it was as sweet as candy. Common, i know this can’t be normal, please give us the food we ask for in traditional way. If i go to a japanese restaurant i want to eat it japanese food not american. Everything else was great. Thank you

The dashi broth ramen is definitely not my thing. The whole wheat noodles for ramen is also not my thing. A very interesting bowl of ramen as I’m usually used to having to pork broth as a base. The pork slices were also a bit thick and not as fatty. Spinach in a bowl of ramen was also an interesting choice. Never again for me.
