The place was almost empty and they took my order after 20 minutes, the food was so normal. For the price, It doesn't worth eating here.
Also in the place there was a smell that almost took my appetite away, really bad experience.
Today i decide to have breakfast here, waiting on my car to be serviced nearby. I ordered a simple breakfast. 2 eggs, hasbrowns & toast. I got 2 small eggs, small portion of hashbrowns, and the toast was just one pice cut in half. For $15 ?? The 8oz glass of orange juice was $8.. What extreme price gouging. Iv'e been going to Mel's for many years. It was never like this. After paying, and included 18% tip.. It was 30 bucks..I wasn't even partially full, the amount of food was so small. Only 4 people eating there. I can see why. Never again.. Stay away from this insanely priced restaurant. If they can't afford to stay in business in this decaying city, then close your doors. It's not fair to make paying customers pay ridiculous prices for food that's below average.
The service was on point, food was exactly how I asked, fresh squeezed orange juice and apple, good music and a fabulous location. My server was Primitivo MV. He is on top of things and personable. My French Toast was 🔥! 😘 to the cook. I would recommend and return!!!!
Food was hot and fresh. Full bar and great service.
I went for dinner for the first time with my wife who was celebrating her birthday. It was 9 o'clock at night and the restaurant was empty with few tables being served. We entered and were directed to the table to wait for the waitress. 15 minutes passed, we waited for service and absolutely no one came to our table to serve us. We lost our patience, got up and left. Terrible service, despicable service.

Mel's Kitchen has taken care of me during my stays to visit my husband in a San Francisco hospital. Great service with all the servers. Caring and compassionate. Best of all really good food.

I ordered the steak and eggs. The waiter at the beginning was nice. He smiled as he gave me options. Thing is, I never saw him again after that. I received a cold, overcooked steak. Not medium like I ordered. But there was literally no one there to rectify. I had to look for someone to get the bill. The staff were huddled in the corner speaking Spanish among themselves. The eggs weren’t bad bad the potatoes were chewy and undercooked. I don’t expect much from this awful city in decline, but this was one of the worst meals I’ve had during my trip.
Do not recommend.

AMBIENCE: Haven't been to a Mel's in awhile so I thought this place was something different lol This location is decorated nicely like a retro diner with a darker/warmer kind of vibe.
FOOD: Food came out pretty quick. Got spaghetti & it wasn't too bad, good portion size & the meatballs tasted really good. My mom got the fish & chips & that was a no for her. It was obvious that they were frozen & not fresh. The vanilla milkshake was my favorite part!
OVERALL: Chose this place because it's attached to the hotel I stayed at & it had a door directly leading to the hotel lobby. An okay option if you're in the area & don't feel heading out at night or ordering food off an app.
Parking: because it's located at a major intersection you may have to find parking down a block or pay to park in a public garage.

Waitress was knowledgeable, very pleasant & quick to wait on us. Food was delicious, very ample & cooked as wanted. I got a mushroom burger, came with fries, friend got Mel's burger no cheese, with fries & we split an order of onions rings. I could not finish mine so much food. I am handicapped, using a cane. When I started back to restroom waitress came up,gave me her elbow to help me. The bathroom was spotless like the restaurant. If I were staying longer I would go back in a heartbeat.

Okay, look: I get it. It's a Mel's, local chain of poopy food and even mediocre service expectations. However, I've visited many a Mel's and had anywhere between a passable and good experience!
This visit set the bar the lowest in recent memory. I'm not even talking about "service": I'm talking about food. I ordered the $33 steak and eggs, which should be a baseball, NY steak and what I got was a sliver of a 4oz, thin cut and overcooked.
Do not go here: if you must Mel's, cruise down to Geary and Arguello and have a better experience. This is not the place to be.

The food was okay but nothing special. When we got in there that day, there was a smell of a burnt pan or something stinking up the restaurant. We ate there anyway. Cause it gets pretty good ratings. The patty met was just a hamburger patty on rye bread and didn't fill the bun like a paddy melt should. The taste was good, though, just kinda thick butter. Nice cold beers, though. And the prices were as good as any place else around there.

Had a great diner style breakfast (French toast, eggs, bacon). Surprised bout the complaints about things being greasy—it’s a diner!
