I ate at Oma SF Station for the second time last week with my wife and two adult daughters. Like our first visit, the experience was outstanding. We have traveled extensively in Japan and are very familiar with traditional, small sushi bars. Oma SF Station is an excellent US version of a small Japanese sushi bar.
It is located in the Japan Town mall tucked away in obscure corner of the mall. Only 8 seats. We stay at the Kabuki Hotel next door several times a year so we find ourselves wandering through this mall and always notice Oma. During the day you will see large Styrofoam containers of fish being delivered. This is always a good indication that you will be having very fresh fish.
We had 4 in our party. 3 of us had the Tsubame menu (12 pieces) and 1 of us had the Sakura menu (16 pieces). The chef managed the mixed menu perfectly.
As this is a small sushi counter, you get to sit directly in front of the chefs and watch them do their magic. The chefs were very engaging and entertaining. I love interacting with sushi chefs.
As for the food.....it was outstanding. Very fresh, great variety and lots of creative preparations. The set omakase menus were really great. I was also able to add a few ala carte items at the end just to top off.
The chef and host were also very knowledgeable about the sake offerings. We enjoyed two different bottlings.
If you want to experience a Tokyo style small sushi bar experience with outstanding food (in the United States), give Oma SF Station a try.
We will be back on our next visit to SF.
If you’re suddenly craving omakase and just want something casual without making it a special occasion, this place is pretty decent. The fish is fresh enough. Nothing bad, but also nothing that really stands out. For the price, some people might prefer a more refined setting. But if you’re out shopping and feel like grabbing some sushi, it’s fine. Not amazing, but it satisfies the craving.
Been twice. I've been to 20+ omekases and this and An are the only two I've ever been to twice (there's just so many in the city).
The first time was truly fantastic. And the miso black cod still ranks as the single best piece of fish I've ever had.
But the second time just..... Wasn't the same.
I got the smaller menu as I usually don't eat much, and my gosh. Even for me it was nothing. It was a snack. I genuinely ordered 6 additional pieces just to have a reasonable meal. And none of it compared to the first time.
I love the vibe, but it did get worse.
Had a great dinner here. Food was great, chef was friendly and went above and beyond.
A Michelin-recommended sushi place!
I tried their Sakura Menu — a 16-item experience. It includes starters, 9 fresh nigiri (all fish!), 2 sashimi, chef’s choice dishes of the day and dessert.
I love their nigiri. The delicate sauces added a whole new layer of flavor. The rice was perfectly seasoned and held the fish just right.
If you are celebrating birthday, they will treat you a special birthday surprise that made the celebration even sweeter.
Oma is dinner-only, so be sure to reserve online in advance—seating is limited!
Worst Omakase experience of my life. Honestly we picked this place going by the reviews only to realise the management had changed recently. The rice used in sushi was actually warm which did not bode well with fresh fish. The omakase chef was barely audible and could not communicate with the diners, an absolute no go for a 150$+ experience. The fish was cut poorly and lacked freshness (at least 1-2 days old). My partner (who is Japanese) said she would not even get paid to eat here, which I think summarizes our experience. Even the green tea served was so bad. How can one get that wrong? Don’t get fooled by good reviews. Stay away!
Contrary to some other comments I specially liked the variety of fish at this place, rather than the usual suspects like toro or sake, you get a lot more kinds of white fish, sea beam was great, kinmedai was also good, many from japan. Price cheap (vs US standards) for omakase. Not five because there are a couple that did taste a bit fishy for me. But loved the concept and the variety. I ordered the cheapest menu, no add-on, and find it already good enough. Would recommend.
Extraordinary taste, fantastic experience, a must-go venue if you like omakase
The fish was solid, and maybe the fish and rice ratio for the nigiri needs work. Mostly the rice wasn't great. I appreciated some of the work and inventive flavors.
But I don't feel like it's a full experience because you can't really see what they are doing behind the counter as the barrier is too high.
It is on the more affordable end of omakase.
it's the end of a hallway with fluorescent lighting. The stools are a bit uncomfortable and crowded with no place to hang a purse or a jacket.

You sit at a place at the end of the japan town mall hallway. It was chilly and noisey. The chef had a slur or accent that made him incomprehensible.
Food ranged from great to barely edible. The intro app was boring. The nigiri pieces were tiny, half the size of regular nigiri pieces. Some were seasoned with yakumi well but others not. The 4 piece sashimi was the worst part of the meal. 3 slices of either duck or pork that was chewy and barely edible and a seared cut of fish that was seared to the point of bitterness seasoned with wasabi. The Salmon sashimi was just marinaded soy sauce belly fat.
The best piece was the toro nigiri and soy sauce.
I had the $160 option. Dessert was okay but nothing specially.
I've had tons of omakase, and this one was one of the worst I've ever had.

My wife and I had dinner here, we selected the omakase course dinner. This restaurant is in the omakase style, which means you leave it up to the chef to decide each course. If you look at their website you'll see the number of course choices. There are only 6-8 places so prebook, sometimes as much as two weeks.
This was some of the best sushi I've ever had and THE best waygu. The fish is very fresh and the chef has several home made sauces, pickles and clever presnetations to amuse your taste buds.
We will definitely be back
