Orale Orale: A San Francisco Financial District Institution

Craving a burrito, I asked for recommendations from two colleagues. Both mentioned Orale Orale; off I went!

Established in 1989, Orale Orale is tucked on the corner of Sacramento and Dumm streets, a place I have walked by many times on my way to work but never walked in to eat.

Choosing simplicity, I ordered a Carnitas Burrito, with all the toppings and a spicy kick. The order-taker was friendly and quick despite the restaurant's lunchtime buzz. The place was packed, suggesting its popularity amongst the regular lunchtime crowd. While waiting for my order, inviting plates, including a couple of combination plates, passed by on their way to the tables.

My to-go burrito arrived in ten minutes, its impressive size and weight promising satiation. My first bite at the office was a burst of flavor. The pinto beans, rice, and meat were perfectly balanced, and the generous portions of spicy salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese improved each bite.

Fully satisfied, I declared myself a happy customer. Would I return? Absolutely, for a filling and delicious Mexican meal.

Parking: There are more paid than free options available in this neighborhood.

Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair accessibility is not an issue here.

The coffee is bad, they serve it in a disposable cup, it is supposed to be refil and they never offer you more, the prices on the physical menu are different from those on the website, the bathroom smelled horrible, the food was acceptable but a bit expensive . The staff was somewhat rude, overall a very bad experience.

As someone who truly loves Mexican cuisine, I had high hopes when visiting Orale Orale. However, it proved to be an utterly disappointing experience from start to finish.
The food was a complete let-down. Dishes that should have been bursting with robust flavor were instead bland and uninspired. The chile colorado burrito was an oily, grease-laden mess lacking any rich, authentic taste. The tacos and enchiladas were equally lackluster - as if the kitchen simply went through the motions without any care for seasoning or freshness. Even the guacamole, a simple pleasure, was clearly made from over-ripe avocados and lacked any vibrant flavor. The atmosphere did nothing to redeem the poor food quality. Rather than an inviting, lively ambiance, it felt like a tired tourist trap - chaotic and unwelcoming for those hoping to linger over a leisurely Mexican meal.
But the worst offense was the indifferent, inattentive service. Our waitress seemed disinterested from the start, more focused on watching the door than taking our order. Her lack of care resulted in us receiving an incorrect order of tacos and enchiladas instead of the chile relleno we had requested. When we politely pointed out the mistake, she instantly became defensive and insisted we had ordered what was brought to the table. Despite being located in the Financial District, this Mexican eatery seems to exist solely as a overpriced tourist trap preying on unwitting visitors and those desperate for a quick bite.

The only thing I know is that it is very tasty. It is one of the 2 authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. Worth the walk and the wait during peak hours.

Best Mexican food we’ve had in a long time. Service is good, everyone behind the counter is communicating, waiters are active and refill drinks/chips without having to ask. Atmosphere is great. Will come back again.
