Parachute Bakery is a French-inspired bakery and café inside San Francisco’s Ferry Building, created by a Michelin-starred restaurant team. It is known for precise, melt-in-your-mouth viennoiserie, including buttery croissants and an intricate signature chocolate entremet shaped like a parachute. The stall draws regular lines that move fairly quickly for its seasonal pastries, specialty coffee drinks, and juices, making it a prime stop for pastry lovers along the Embarcadero.
The pastries are easily some of the most beautifully crafted, luxurious-tasting treats, with every single one feeling intentional and thoughtful. Standouts include the Pain au Chocolat, hailed as one of the best outside of France with beautiful lamination and a balanced dark chocolate flavor. The Vanilla Passionfruit Cube is super fresh with silky cream, offering a perfect contrast of bright acidity and creamy sweetness. The black sesame yuzu cookie balances citrus and nutty flavors perfectly and is not too sweet. The Everything Kouign Amann is a must-try, and seasonal specials like a Valentine's Day croissant can be insane with delicious, bright, tart, and sweet filling.
While the prices are pretty high and the place is usually packed and noisy, the quality matches the cost. The masala chai, made from a family recipe, is traditional and tastes like homemade chai, though some find drinks overpriced. Not every item is a hit; the coffee cardamom bun disappointed one reviewer with an unexpected orange presence. However, the overall experience is a serious joy and an absolute delight, making it a rare spot worth returning to and easy to recommend for original, high-quality pastries.
