This is probably the best and most impressive omakase I’ve had in San Francisco so far. I highly recommend it, especially for special occasions like birthdays or celebrations. The service, the food, everything was absolutely perfect. The freshness of the fish was outstanding. I really loved it and I’ll definitely be back again.

Absolutely amazing experience. I'm sorry to hear that they're going to be on pause while they ramp up their cafe on New Montgomery. But if I could give this place 10 stars, I would. The staff was perceptive, attentive, and inviting. The food was amazing. The presentation, incredible. The attention to detail was superb. The price is not for the faint of heart, but the memory will last a long time.

We came here to celebrate a birthday and did not leave disappointed. The food was really good and had some fun spins on Japanese ingredients that were creative compared to other omakase spots in the city.
The whole vibe of the place is modern and polished, yet warm. Before the courses begin they show you the fish that will be used and the supplements you can get, we got the uni supplement which came in a little box for us to enjoy through out the meal. It was of really high quality, sweet and light with no after taste. There were two types of in house made ginger with different textures that pair well with different courses and they brought outa bluefin tuna head to tell us more about the fish and how it’s used in sushi which was fun.
Would highly recommend for an occasion!

We have been to The Shota twice for New Year's okmakase and what an experience - incredible both times; great if you are a seafood lover - we don't eat meat and it's mostly fish and vegetables so it is perfect for us. The food is amazing (and there is a lot of it); the experience of watching them prepare it - it's like art; the precision and combination of flavors is just so delicious. I don't know anything about Sake but their accompanying tasting menu was quite good. Our chef's both had a great sense of humor adding to the atmosphere. Fabulous for 2 people, great for 3 or 4 if you can get the corner of the bar; more than that and you're spread out - but for a very special occasion for two people, awesome.

Read other low reviews before you come here. It’s a repeated problem that the staff treat regulars differently and ignore other patrons to the point where they repeatedly had to apologize for delaying our course as it sat there. The regulars even kept using foul language and yelling across the counter and was trash talking another couple who was not even in earshot for no reason and the staff just laughed it off. Omakase was above average but unless you’re a regular it’s not worth it.

What an incredible, unforgettable experience. The food is exquisite: the ingredients are of the highest quality, the preparation is top-notch, and the flavour combinations are stunning. It’s a wonderful combination of dishes, including sushi, though that’s not the star of the show. Instead, the other dishes are the highlight of the evening: from the slow-cooked octopus to the sashimi and, most of all, the gyuoku banana cake. Incredible. The wagyu sushi, an addendum, is also marvellous, perfectly executed.
The service is also lovely. Everyone is incredibly friendly and attentive. A very minor comment is that all explanations about the courses were very standardised, including the speed of delivery (sometimes hard to follow), making it feel a tad less personal. But that’s only for the explanations of the dishes—other than that, it was really personal and intimate.
The ambience is also excellent. I will absolutely come here again.

One of the most personal and intimate sushi experiences of my life. And I call it an experience (And not a restaurant) for a reason. Also, saying the food was amazing is the understatement of the century.

One of my favorite restaurants in SF. Each bite was delicious, and the beverage pairing complemented the food well.

Awesome experience here. The food is amazing. They don't try to impress you with expensive but boring ingredients like uni or caviar. Instead, they offer fresh, delicious fish and well-designed and thoughtful recipe. The servers/chefs are super nice and we had some good discussions on food.

One of my favorite omakase experiences I have had was at The Shota. Jason was our chef and we talked with him about his experience training in Japan and how he was a San Francisco native. Every course was amazing but I really enjoyed the sashimi course! Aside from the food the place is beautiful and the plating is so well thought out.

This place is pretty inside and the food was fine, but for $800 omakase, I’m a little mad about it. Been here twice and forgot how forgettable the first time was.. till eating the same menu again 3 years later and wondering, wait why did we come back for this?!
Ok ok the fish is from Japan but like.. if I time it right, I could fly to Japan for $800. Maybe I missed the complexities or intricacies of each dish when the descriptions were given muffled, behind masks.. enthusiasm of staff was mixed, to say the least. EXCEPTION was young woman with glasses who deserves a promotion, a raise, and much praise.
30% of the dishes are above average good, 60% average good, and 10% below average (that kimbap looking thing specifically, among others..). Interior is intimate and pretty, but it’s inside a random building with a loud bar next door so vibes are slightly above average at best.
Overall I am very lukewarm. I would go if someone I don’t like very much is paying.
