Turned up on time for reservation. Took 15 minutes to get seated (couldn't find host... who seemed very distracted or something). Another 15 minutes for a server to take our drink order.
This was a pricy and terrible experience. Our food took 45 minutes to be served, the server was incredibly rude (at one point her spit landed on my face) and the restaurant itself was really loud. Not worth at all
I love the ambiance of Tosca. Classic San Francisco style restaurant that captures the look and feel of the old North Beach The staff is welcoming and the food is good and delivered timely . You dont feel rushed . Definitely recommend it
What on earth has happened to the food quality? It was horrible— basic red sauce and no different from my child's red pasta there. Not an ounce of quality or love put into it at all. Broccoli was bland and undercooked. And are you kidding me with $25 caviar chips? TWO stale chips?! With a squeeze of hard sour cream and a pinprick amount of caviar? Last night was thee most disappointing meal I've had in a while. Hard pass going forward and I'm a local. Swing and a miss
Everything was underwhelming except for the lighting -- the lighting was ridiculous. Way too bright. Was so disappointed at every level.
Everything was perfect. Food, service, atmosphere. Anna Weinberg is my dear friend, and a genius restaurant, events, hospitality STAR. I have done a lot of business with her over the years and she has never let me down. I will support Anna in whatever she does.
Excellent. Classic dishes served with the traditional flair of this institution. Lovely as always.
It's too bad and I'm sad that this SF institution has really slipped over the years. It used to be solid. This night our service was slow and food was meh. The one stand out was the foccaccia and meatballs -- these haven't changed and were delicious. But our pasta was glue-y, the saltimbuca was overcooked and my friend found a hair in his food -- he doesn't have hair, so definitely wasn't his! Yuck. We didn't make a fuss, but no apology was made either. Won't be returning.
Something has changed here.. it wasn't quite the same. Had a reservation and stood at the door waiting to be greeted for a few minutes. There were four other tables sat at the time- so it wasn't busy. Service was very slow, not sure if our server forgot about us or she thought someone else was taking care of us. The Pene was sort of lack luster, not a ton of flavor and nothing special for $27. I miss their arugula salad!
Tosca Cafe was hosting an event the night we ate dinner. It was a full buyout for a company holiday party (a pretty rowdy one, which I wouldn't expect for a classy restaurant), and there was a back room with a few tables where they put anyone with a reservation. The service was really lacking back there, as the staff was mainly focused on the event. It also wasn't a great vibe in this random room either. I think if you're having an event, you shouldn't accept dinner reservations for the same night. Was not a good experience.

Showed up for our reservation, to find a paper sign on the door saying it was closed for a private event. Received no warning that the reservation wouldn't be honored. Have enjoyed the restaurant during past visits.
Made a reservation for 7 people at 8pm on 12/10 for my work holiday party. I made the reservation on 11/6 and confirmed via text at 11am on 12/9. When we showed up to the restaurant there was a sign saying that Tosca was closed for a private party. I spoke with a bartender who got me in touch with the owner Anna Weinberg. She told us to come to her other restaurant. When we walked up there was another “closed for private event” sign in the door. Anna's energy was off putting, erratic, and frantic. She blamed OpenTable for allowing the reservation, said “she didn't think anyone would show up” and then promised a gift card that I have yet to receive a response about when following up. She did provide champagne and some oysters and a few potato chips with caviar which her team did a beautiful job of preparing for us. She spilled champagne all over the bar when she was trying to refill our glasses. Terrible. I do not suggest making reservations here for any special events as the probability that you will get bumped is high. Just read the other public reviews here and on other sites to get a good picture of how they treat their customers .
There were a ton of bad reviews and I was scared to take my large party there but we have the best food the best time. The wait staff was awesome and everything was perfect. There was a little lack of selection, but everything else made up for.
What a loss to San Francisco. Before its new owners mired it in mediocrity, this was once among the most magical dining experiences I’ve ever had. It may as well be an airport concession—uninspired, careless, pointless. Who would turn this cave of wonder into a dim tourist trap? Its new owners, with an infallible reverse Midas touch, who have a gift for squeezing margins out of a menu and little else. It wouldn’t matter so much if Tosca itself didn’t mean as much as it does. We can only hope the next owners—and judging by the thin crowds, that day will come—have more to offer.
The manager Anna was so attentive and the staff was amazing. The food was top notch as well as the service. Thank you again for another fantastic return to your restaurant!
