Updated as of 3/21:Sonya reached out to me about the cake and offer to make another 4 inch black sesame matcha cake for my sister's birthday. I do appreciate with store owners reach out as it shows they valued their customers. The black sesame matcha cake is their popular cake. My family is a fan of matcha and black sesame, so finding a cake with these two combo is a plus. The chiffon cake tastes like matcha and is like a soft sponge cake. The black sesame cream was not overly sweet, but do wish it was more black sesame flavor (just my personal preference). Matcha can have some bitterness and black sesame has a nutty flavor, if these are not your taste, this cake is not for you.1 star :Today (3/18) I ordered two cakes for my sister’s birthday. I made a call in order - I got a 4 inch black sesame matcha and a 6 inch strawberry vanilla cake. The black sesame matcha cake smelled sour and tasted sour! We believed the cake was spoiled! The strawberry cake was dry and hard like a rock. Worst cakes we ever ate.

Used to like their cake. However after this time, their cake is mostly cream now. For 50 dollars? Really ? For cream ?

Expensive for an average flavor and very small portions. The early grey shortbread lacked flavor, the chocolate shortbread was dry like a brick. Disappointing.

My co-worker and I were walking back to work when we saw this bakery. We both wandered in and were impressed by the artistry of all their products: bread, pastries, cookies, cake, and sandwiches. Their cakes were beautiful! He got ginger cookies. I got the slice of raspberry chocolate cake. Very nice-

I wasn't very impressed by the taste or texture of the items I got. $6 brownie. I handed this to my brother after 2 bites. I expected it to taste better and be more moist. $7 double chocolate cake slice. It was a normal slice of cake 3.75 citrus chocolate muffin. It was kind of dry and didn't have much flavor. I'll stick with Costco 6 pack muffins. I am very curious about their other cake selection though. Black Sesame with roasted soy sounds promising.

I really liked the cake! It wasn't too sweet and it tasted very simple and classy. The frosting was light and tasted fresh. I can see why people order their cakes from here. However, I didn't love the pastries. They weren't bad, just not good. Seemed bland. It's possible that they don't put any unnecessary ingredients in their products. I don't know. The two helping me were nice. The store is bright and conveniently next to boba guys so I would like to go there again while waiting for my boba to try other items to see if they had an off day.

I have been a customer for a few years now and think it's the best place for cake in town. If you are looking for a real gourmet cake experience with sophisticated flavors, good ingredients, not "sugar-on-sugar-on-top-of-sugar", and gorgeous, not tacky, design - this is the place. I have tried many varieties so far, ordered a few cakes for holidays and birthdays, and it's always a "can I have some more please" experience (and I am not even a cake person!). Additionally, I LOVE their Bouche de Noel (log cake) for the holidays, but I wasn't in town for the dates they were selling it. I asked if it was possible to get it a few days later and Sonya was able to accommodate the request! Grateful to have this business in our wonderful city.

I'm sorry to say this place is simply not good. I've been here about four times and every time I've walked away disappointed. I decided four was enough; I'm never going here again. Many of the pastries are tiny and very expensive, which could be fine if they tasted incredible but the best thing I've had from here was just "okay". The biggest disappointment was their Thanksgiving pecan pie that I preordered. I think I paid something like $70 for it. The pie was small, maybe 8 inches tops, the crust had chipped off in a few parts, it looked overcooked, and tasted so bland. If I pay $70 for a pie, it either needs to taste delicious, look beautiful, or be huge. I got zero. Only embarrassment at contributing that for Thanksgiving. To top this off, most of the time I've gone there, the person ringing me up acts like it is a huge annoyance to them. I don't expect people in service to be cheerful automatons but I've been here multiple times and felt uncomfortable ordering.

My husband and I have been a regular at this place for a few months, and always get their cake slices (my favorites are the double chocolate and green tea ). Last week, we decided to try their bingsu, a shaved ice dessert from south Korea. We got both the classic red bean and seasonal fruit bowl. I've tried a few versions of this dessert throughout the Bay Area, but the authenticity of this dessert and high quality of the ingredients stood out to me. Neither bowls were overly sweet, and the shaved ice was light and fluffy. Both were amazing, but the red bean one was especially memorable. The portions were slightly big for one person, but no complaints! Would recommend for anyone who's looking to try something new.

The top cream has a refrigerator taste and smell. Not fresh. Inside Cake layer is soft.

This cake shop is a 3.5 for me but I brought it to 4 since Yelp doesn't do half points. The location in Portrero Hill for pick up was pretty convenient for me since I could walk from Soma, you could also walk over to the Muni or drive. The store itself is quite basic and doesn't offer much beyond the counter with very little seating. Service was efficient but not particularly warm. I ordered the black sesame & soybean cake for a friend's birthday and they also included a little personalized happy birthday sign for us! The cake itself transported well and came in a nice box. The cake was very light and fluffy which I love in chiffon cakes. The black sesame overwhelmed the soybean flavor so I think it would have worked better overall as just black sesame if they wanted to amp up those flavors. The cream was ok. I would like to try their other flavors although I would need another special occasion since they only come in whole cakes!
