A great Chinese restaurant! Excellent menu with dishes cooked to perfection. They use high quality ingredients & it comes thru as every dish we ordered was outstanding.
Disappointed on my 3rd visit to Z & Y. It was in the middle of tourist season with a line out the door. Some of the good was good. Mushu Pork always a favorite. But the Oxtail stew was challenging to eat with a lot of small bone fragments, and I ran into a big lump of bouillion. Somehow it's also gotten a lot more expensive. Server was inexperienced. Will try other, less-known places in Chinatown next time.
I would not return here because of overpriced for food and service not worth it! - they included 10% surcharge on bill without letting you know, it was not noted anywhere on menu, it was confusing on the machine, then they ask for a tip, before you can sign which I had no choice it appeared they charged the tax on food order plus the surcharge, which I was not aware of that extra charge, I then I added 20% tip so I actually paid a 30% tip which was absolutely not warranted for the service at all very minimum service, and quality of food not worth it! plus they charged .50 each for 4 boxes $2 extra for some leftovers! outrageous! The value for food and service is overpriced and not worth the money, I will never return there. and do not recommend this restaurant. a resident of San Francisco
Amazing food, fast service. Typical Chinese vibe—loud and busy. Place feels a bit run-down, especially the toilets.
Food was tasty but portions were not enough for our party of 10. In fact, the waiter served the soup did not count the bowls and only dished out 9 bowls of soup (Westlake Beef ). The Baked Clams in Garlic White Wine was the best best of the night. They didn't have Hot Braised Whole Fish. I had called the day before to see if I needed to order in advance for the Peking Roast Duck. The person who answered the phone said is was not necessary. On the day of the dinner, the waiter said they didn't have it! Suggested Smoked Tea Duck , which was dry and charged me the cost of the Peking Roast Duck! $68.95! The Braised Oxtail with Red wine in Stone Pot was tasty but not everyone had a taste (small portion); the Pea Sprouts stir-fried with garlic was overpriced ($26.95). Finally, the Stir fried crab with garlic ($68) was OK but small. I've had better Stir fried crabs at R&G Lounge, Harborview and other restaurants in Chinatown. The Restaurant is small, had crowds waiting out on the street ... I was tempted to tell then to go to New Lun Ting (Pork chop house) or Wo Loy Guey for dinner and then to Red's for a drink! I enjoyed Z&Y when it was the Chilli House on Clement Street. Sorry, Z&Y is over rated.
The food didn't come out in the order one would expect. The appetizers arrived after the entrees which was disappointing. Otherwise the food was good. The space was incredibly noisy and you couldn't hear your dining companions speak.
The restaurant was very accommodating with our changing times. The food was very good as well as the drinks.
Great food! The tables are a little close to each other, and there is some noise. The servers are professionals, but not too uplifting.
We visited the restaurant based on its Michelin reputation, but were somewhat disappointed. While the food was good, it didn't quite meet the expectations of a Michelin-rated establishment, and the pricing felt a bit high for what was offered. Additionally, the restaurant added a 10% surcharge, which is higher than most other places. Overall, it was a mediocre experience, and we don't plan on returning.
Food is very mediocre, too noisy and tables are way too close to each other , prices are super high for what you get . Not good value and limited choices of food and no cocktails either .

Delicious food, fast and friendly service, and was so easy and accommodating to my large group! Everyone had a great time and kept ranting and raving about the food. Thank you for making my 40th birthday so special!
Those who complain on the thread about spicy food perplex me—why did they go to a Sichuan restaurant? I have a lower craving/tolerance for spice than a typical Chinese person with Sichuan roots—I like the flavor but don't seek the heat necessarily. To me, the food at Z&Y was the appropriate level of spicy and flavorful. Actually, there's a variety of regional specialties, and our party just ordered what we felt like without regard to trying to get a typical Sichuan meal. I had meant to book a table at Z&Y Peking Duck across the street, but I didn't mind the mistake! I don't live in SF, and am willing to shell it out for a Michelin fine dining experience. I found Z&Y was relatively expensive and in slightly more modest proportion to what one might expect for a typical Chinatown restaurant, but worth it due to the extremely high quality and authentic food. Decor and service style are also typical Chinatown vibe. We had to get egg rolls for the youngest adult with us, and they were crisp and tasty. Tan tan noodles had spice and subtle flavor at the same time. We ordered Peking duck and I wondered if we got the tea smoked duck, but we didn't even complain because there was a LOT of duck and the smoky flavor was unique and delicious—and there were enough thin pancakes, sauce, cucumber, and spring onions. Pea shoots and cumin beef were very tasty. We added on Dong Po Ro (Pork Shoulder) as our last dish came to the table because we needed more food. It came to the table quickly and was melt in your mouth tender. Yes, it is very fatty, but that's the point of this cut—if you don't like fat, don't get Dong Po Ro! Lots of happy accidents with this meal, wouldn't change a thing.
If you want some authentic Sichuan dishes, Z&Y is the place to go! Even my vegan friend loves it here. Great work!
Kind of chaotic, sit at this table then no take this one. Food pretty excellent with the exception of Beef with Chilli Oil- overwhelmed by the oil. Other dishes were excellent. Overall good experience.
Great spot for a larger group due to the round tables and family-style servings. Food and service were very good, despite the packed house.
