I had Acopio bookmarked for months and nearly forgot about it until I started thinking hard about where to take a guest from out of town. Acopio looked very appealing, but I didn't expect that a Mexican-fusion restaurant on the east side of San Jose would be Michelin-worthy. Acopio's space is very well-kept and designed both festively and elegant. The service was attentive and clearly a point of pride, a stark contrast from my inexplicable experience at True Laurel in SF last weekend where I waited for 30 minutes before a server came back to check on me.

Each dish was artful, despite the simplicity of a dish such as Tacos Al Pastor, which consisted of pork confit, charred pineapple and fresh tortillas. The pork belly was marinated and seared to perfection. Together with a bit of tomatillo salsa, it was a unique elevated interpretation of Tacos Al Pastor that I'm already craving again. Each ingredient was meticulously marinated, charred and presented. The Tacos de Cachete was an interestingly textured dish, with pickled white onion pedals and beef cheek. A bit mushy but flavorful.

On a second subsequent trip, I tried the Molé Poblano con Pierna de Pato & Chile Relleno. The duck was tender and perfectly seasoned. The molé was tangy and brighter than other molés that I have tried but it went well with the other components of the dish. The most impressive part was the Chile Relleno, which was made with a dried Pasilla chile that had a great chewy texture which was a pleasant surprise. It seemed more artfully crafted, would love to find out how they achieved that texture.

The Coctel de Camarones had an unexpectedly familiar taste. Thai-style Tom Kha coconut and tomatillo broth with jicama and freshly peeled and de-veined prawns. Fantastic fusion dish.

Finally, the chocolate churros and house-made Mexican chocolate ice cream also had a chili sauce on the ice cream with a nice kick to it.

Acopio is one of the finest restaurants in San Jose. It is a real gem that is doing Mexican fusion at the next level. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Wonderful dining experience with delicious, fresh ingredients and meal preparation. Our waiter, Raul, was very courteous, prompt and assisted to identify foods that were not too spicy!

Acopio never fails to steal our hearts with their impeccable service, delicious and ever changing menu and kind-hearted love of this community. We’ve been coming here for the entire time they’ve been open and the food, somehow, just keeps getting better. Highly recommend for a date night or just a drink or two. One of my favorite spots in the South Bay.

It was a quiet night at Acopio. We had excellent attentive service without it being overbearing. The food was really wonderful. It was delicious, multi-layered, and inventive. Plus I felt each dish was generous, not a large portion but one that was perfectly satisfying. Except the churro with three ice creams which was a large portion, fabulous, and more than we could finish after everything else we tried. I will definitely order it again! Next time I want to try sitting at the bar during happy hour and enjoy that menu!! (5-6:30 daily and 5-9 on Sundays)

Wow! The cocktails up front let you know what to expect - full of balanced flavors, not too sweet - conversation starters. The food followed in the same vein... And (excellent) wine from Mexico! Will go again. And again ..

My wife and I have been here 4 times. Each time better than the last. I’m not sure how that happens. This last time was so incredible that, even though our favorite dessert left the menu, I left my cell phone number with the staff so they can call me when that spicy chocolate ice cream return.

Good food and creative menu—kudos to the kitchen.

That said, I came here on a comedy night for a business dinner, which quickly turned into a painfully loud and awkward experience. We politely stepped outside for dessert so we could actually hear each other talk. Apparently, that bruised someone’s ego on stage, because the comedian felt the need to make a cheap shot at my 20-year-old intern—something along the lines of “yeah, go back to your white boyfriend.”

Just to clarify, that “boyfriend” was actually our client. So thanks for turning a professional dinner into an uncomfortable moment for a young intern who had zero interest in being part of the show.

Roasting your audience can be funny when done well. Randomly targeting people who clearly don’t want to engage? Not so much. I came for the food. I left because of the comedy.
