This place is unique because it serves many different dishes than Traditional pho restaurant.
The service is excellent. Very impressed in a Vietnamese restaurant to get such great service. The server literally observe how we eat and started brining sauce and chili sauce to us without even asking. And offered hot water on a cold day.
The fried rice - it's not bad. I've had better in Chinese restaurant. The way I would make it differently is to use oil to fried the anchovies pieces and mash some of them into the oil and the rest in crunchy cube and then stir fry the chicken and the rice with those oil. It'll be much tastier.
Octopus was neat. It's the baby octopus and not the big octopus legs. It does depends on the sauce for its flavor not as strong. Suggestion would be using a honey/chili sauce to stir fry at the end to coat it with some sweet and spicy flavor.
They have many other dishes, I hope I can try it next time I'm in the area.

Shaking beef was legit and very tasty. However, you just don't get very much meat for the price you pay - lots of filler (lettuce, onions, etc.)

The worst salted fish fried rice I've ever tasted. It has a weird bitter aftertaste that left my mouth feeling like it was stuffed with cotton. The sauce they use also has aspartame or some kind of chemical sweetener. I'm pescatarian and wanted only fish and rice, but this dish was full of chicken. I threw it out.

The overall experience was okay. The food was good but it was overpriced for many items. I always prefer Vietnamese restaurants when dining, so I have visited a lot of them. This place was probably 7/10.Pros are:- many local VN dishes that are hard to find in the US like clams, snails and mussels- many tasty hotpot options for large groups- extensive menu like a VN family style restaurant- service was fast- spacious dining areaCons are:- way overpriced- seatings was quite cramped in spite of the space- pay with credit cards gets charged 3% not included in the bills unlike many restaurants
Vegetarian options: Not much veggie options.
Kid-friendliness: Kid’s high chairs and utensils

New update to my previous review from last year. Phuong Nam is my favorite restaurant in San Jose. Been to San Jose 3 times, ate at Phuong Nam 6 times. My go to is cơm bò lóc lạc, cơm sườn bò đại hạn. #83, #84. The bò nướng lá lót is another good one. #57. The food tastes great. I eat here once a week if I lived in this state.Phuong Nam uses very fresh ingredients and high quality meats. The filet Mignon melts in your mouth. Everything is cooked fresh to order. Highly recommended.

The food actually tastes pretty good and they open relatively late. An extensive menu, probably more than 60 dishes. But the issue really comes down to price. Each dish on my review costs around $20. You can see there isn't much, especially for the chicken cartilage.Three dishes ended up around $66 after taxes so yeah, it is expensive.

This place was highly recommended to me by my sister. She said that she and my mom had an amazing dining experience here last month. So today I called in to order food and was told that it should be ready in about 20-30 mins. I went there to pick it up and the place was clean and spacious. I love the chill vibe on a Sunday night. I’ve been to dozens of Vietnamese restaurant in the past but Phuong Nam Restaurant is by far the best in terms of cleanliness and ambience. I ordered their Shaking Beef and it was so damn good! The beef was so tender and juicy that it melts in your mouth. The owner was so nice and very accommodating too. I will definitely be coming back to try their other food. I highly recommend Phuong Nam Restaurant to those seeking a good service, good value, cleanliness, and top-notch Vietnamese cuisine.

One of the best places for vietnamese food. Every item we ordered hit the spot. The staff are very nice, polite and well mannered. Super recommend this restaurant. You won't regret it.
Food was alright, quite overpriced. Apparently many people enjoyed the fried chicken feed, it was just salty and crunchy like chips, not a good appetizer. Sour soup was fairly good, but of course a bit much msg, otherwise not bold enough flavors.

I come here after reading all the reviews. I was skeptical about it but the foods were actually amazing. I can’t stop munching on the chicken feet. The shaking beefy was so tasty and the beef melted in my mouth!! Nothing taste like frozen food that just get recooked.I had my kids with me but they don’t like Vietnamese food as much, however phuong the owner went out of her way and make them fries and nuggets from the chicken wings. All the server were so nice, hence they made me feel obligated to share my experience here on Google for everyone to know this good restaurant. The foods , the people and the atmosphere were amazing!!!
Dietary restrictions: They will go the extra miles for you and your family. Phuong the owner will make sure you have the best experience with Phuong Nam restaurant.
Kid-friendliness: The server is supper nice and kids friendly

This was our first Here and we will be coming back again. The only knock that I would have for this restaurant is they don't have much vegetarian options and lunch was kind of pricy. The server was not as attentive as I would like. With that said, the quality of the food was phenomenal and our server was very helpful and cute, which helps. Overall, you must at least try this place once.
Everything we ordered here (as recommended by the server) was so good, but I have to especially mention the Thai fried rice. This dish was delicious! Followed by the asparagus crabmeat soup and the Shaking Beef dish. It was late and we were hungry so I forgot to take photos of the food. We also enjoyed the Vietnamese music playlist. We hadn't really listened to Vietnamese pop music before but we quite enjoyed listening to it and watching the music videos on the big TV on the wall behind the counter.
