My girlfriend has been coming here since a child and shared this place with me and I can't stop thinking and talking about it. Family owned and the staff there are very kind. The food is 10 out of 10! I recommend this place to everyone that comes to town! This is a San Jose gem for sure!

I've been going to Gombei for years and I keep coming back for the excellent food, fast and friendly service, and the excellent prices. If you've never been to Gombei before, please note that it DOES NOT serve sushi. Gombei serves authentic Japanese comfort food. The pork cutlets, chicken and beef teriyaki are by far the best. Look on the specials board on the wall for authentic Japanese dishes offered that most people have never tried. Serving sizes are moderate and your order is brought to your table quickly.

I really enjoyed the beef, it was cooked medium, full of flavor, and absolutely delicious! The service was great as well. The only downside is that seating is limited, so you may need to wait for a table. If you don’t go over the weekend you should be fine

Delicious, home style Japanese food. Service popped by regularly to refill hot tea. Nice and quiet location in the middle of Japan Town!
Beef teriyaki and pork cutlet was great. You can specify doneness, and the cutlet stayed crispy even with sauce on it. Definitely use katsu sauce liberally!

This place is my go to spot. The teriyaki chicken donburi is the best. Tender juicy chicken on a bed of rice served in a bowl. It's so good that the only dish I've ordered and I've been going there for over two decades.

I thought the food was comparable to what I had in Japan, although not as traditional with a Western flare in terms of flavor. For a Japanese cuisine eatery, it would be a place I'd go to get a sense of Japanese cuisine as they seemed to have a good variety of chicken/fish dishes. It's a solid place and I would come here again but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
Good overall amount of food was served but the taste was lacking. Definitely better options nearby.

Ample amount of food. Unfortunately, the taste was not so good. Tuna sashima appeared to be from frozen pack and not freshly aged type. It also had some fishy smell and taste. The fish was either not so fresh or the knife used to cut had some residuals of the fish cut prior to mine. The chicken teriyaki was okay, though it also had analogous fishy taste. The grilled mackerel also had fishy taste (lingering afterward) that indicated that the fish was likely not so fresh. We were disappointed somewhat...

We have been dining here for more than 20 years. Used to be crowded and had to wait in line all the time. Now, for some reasons, less people are there. It’s an old fashion place so may not be catchy as other newer restaurants. But, this is still my family’s comfort food place.
