Loved the vegetarian combo and mushroom main course we had here. Delicious food, excellent customer service, and lovely environment! Our waitress was amazing and helpful. Kids loved the food too and devoured it all!
We used to go to another popular Ethiopian place regularly but unreasonable wait times and bad attitude in service made us stop.
I hope they keep up good service at Mudai!

We had 3 women share 2 of the vegetarian combo dishes and one person had a chicken with turmeric and ginger. The vegetarian combo came with 4 dishes and salad. Two of the dishes were unbelievably delicious and with very different spices!! Another was very nice. The fourth was tasty but nothing compared to the others. The bread was light, with a very nice texture. The serving sizes were large! We didn’t quite finish the 2 dishes, with 3 of us. The chicken was also reported to be very tasty, but I don’t eat chicken, so I can only go by report. I don’t live nearby, but this place is definitely going on my list to come back soon!!

Delicious authentic Ethiopian Food and large portions!

Health and safety concerns at Mudai Ethiopian Restaurant, located at 503 W San Carlos St, San Jose, CA 95126.

On December 20, at approximately 5 PM, I placed two pickup orders at this establishment. During my visit, I observed disturbing practices that compromise food safety. Specifically, the cashier touched the inside of the food containers and later, the cook repeated the same action before placing the cooked meat. Additionally, the cashier handled bread with unwashed hands after coming into contact with money and other items. Despite my efforts to express my concerns, the cashier and the owner dismissed my feedback, indicating that such practices are standard at their establishment.

This lack of sanitation and disregard for customer well-being is alarming. I have reported similar issues in the past, including the presence of human hair in my food, and received no satisfactory resolution from the owner.

Highly recommend the chicken sambussa appetizer, lamb stew (Beg Alicha Wot), and okra (Bamia Tips)! Good atmosphere.

Got the veggie combo & my husband got the chicken. It was all really good, the yellow lentil dish was a little hard, but flavors were great and they weren't oily. My husband said the chicken wasn't very spicy like it said. Would eat here again. Parking was a little hard. Service was really nice.

Mudai Restaurant

I want to personally recognize Mudai as a gem for authentic Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine. This spot truly delivers the genuine flavors of home, making it a “home away from home” for me. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, I had the pleasure of dining here with my brother and little sister, and the experience left a lasting impression—we couldn’t stop thinking about the incredible taste.

I drove 50 miles from San Francisco just to enjoy the amazing food and outstanding service, and it was absolutely worth it. I encourage everyone to give Mudai a try; I guarantee you’ll keep coming back. The food is excellent, the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the space is perfect whether you’re dining solo, meeting with a group, hosting a birthday party, or gathering with colleagues for lunch.

I rarely write reviews, but the exceptional quality of food and service here compelled me to share my experience. Mudai truly surprised me—in the best way possible.
