Used to love this place. Had a run in over our daughter's registered service dog. Got pretty testy. Food was good, expensive for what you get. Going uppity it seems. Bummed to see that.

Absolutely the best Mexican food in Southern California. El Maguey is an institution for those of us who have grown up in Orange County. I’ve spent birthdays, Christmas Eves, and many happy moments in my life enjoying delicious Mexican food at El Maguey. The staff is so kind and so helpful and the food is so authentic and delicious that I can’t wait to go back there very soon.

When you tell them that your allergic and they still put it in your food, they didn't remake but removed it and returned the food to you. The allergic item was Guacamole/Avocado something that can be preventable.

Great family style Mexican restaurant. I have been stopping at El Maguey for years and have never been disappointed. I particularly like their ceviche and mole dishes.

We stopped for dinner at 8:13pm (their website says they close at 9. Backed up traffic in town from an accident at Ortega kept us from arriving earlier). We walked in, all the tables were cleared, chairs stacked. Nope, their service was done. We could order to go but even that was agreed to very begrudgingly. Don’t misunderstand, we love their food but maybe they should update their website to say they close at 8pm…

Very casual mom and pop Mexican restaurant with fabulous food. Free on site parking lot is a big plus.

We showed up at 8:25pm when their website clearly says they close at 9pm. The open sign was still lit, but as soon as we walked in, we were told they were closed and asked to leave. When I pointed out the posted hours, the employee walked outside and turned off the open sign right then. We ended up going to Ricardo's down the street, where they were still happily serving guests with a smile, even close to closing. Closing early and turning customers away while the sign is on is not just unprofessional--it's misleading. Very disappointing experience and terrible business practice. Won't be back.
We’ve been coming here for more than 10 years just for the take out chicken burritos. They are not what they used to be. What we used to get was a huge burrito that was bursting at the seems. Now there seems to be about a third less size than it was. Greatly lacking in meat and the meat is just garbage. It doesn’t matter what they’ve done for years the past 4-5 burritos we got the past few months were scanty in their meat fillings The burrito is leg and thigh meat. While they have always used these type of cheap meats, I can get a white meat burrito elsewhere that is tasty and spicy. I was given a sample of white meat and the taste was no more than just boiled and flavorless. I have a picture of a burrito from this place from five years ago and my wife exclaimed, “wow, it’s like a third thicker.” This place has gone the way of Rosa Maria’s out in Redlands a place we used to enjoy until they stopped filling the burrito up so much and what you got was mostly tortilla. We haven’t gone back in years. So, goodbye!
PS - When you call in an order they only answer in Spanish. They do give you the impression when you’re in picking up they prefer the local clientele that also speak Spanish - in addition the manager was rude as hell
