Best Detroit style pizza in OC!
Food: 5
We loooove Lunita's! This ain't your average mediocre pie. It's artisinal. From the crispy yet chewy crust to the sauce and the selection of unique combos (my personal favorite is the Sexy Roni), every bite of a Lunita's pie is simply delicious. Oh, and we got the Caesar salad last time, which was also really good-- elevated and super fresh.
They've also got great t-shirts. And regarding the text to order concept, I think it's fun and refreshing -- it's right to the point and simple to do.

This is a great pizza. The crust is essentially focaccia. We get the sexyroni, which is pepperoni, ricotta and basil - get the hot honey with it. You have to order ahead (pick up only) via sms text. Look them up on Instagram to get the info. It is located at the El Maguey restaurant in San Juan Capistrano.

We ordered the Red Five and it was delicious. Detroit style, buttery, burnt cheese crust (reminds me of Pequods crust in Chicago), flavorful. Had to text to order and no where to dine in, pick up only. Overall great pizza.

Most amazing pizza me and my kids have ever had. Unique crust, variety, taste explosion and very satisfying. After traveling the world over we’ve found the best right here in Capistrano Orange County.

This has been a long awaited place for me on my pizza journey. I'm glad to have finally made it.
Food: Very good. As always I disclaim that I get a plain cheese the first time I visit a new pizzeria. The bread/crust reminded me of something very specific that I can't quite put my finger on, but it is a good Detroit crust. High rise, but nice and airy in the middle, with a good crisp on the outside. The crispy, caramelized cheese on the edges was perfectly executed. The sauce was bright, but seemed to lack a little flavor. It was similar with the cheese...a good cheese, but seemingly missing a little something. While a very good pizza overall, it just left me wanting. No doubt the creations with toppings are also very good and almost certainly better than the cheese, but for me it's important that the cheese can stand on it's own. Every element is pretty solid, but nothing is a standout except the caramelized cheese (which should be automatic for any Detroit). I do look forward to going back and trying the Sexy-Roni though. It was good enough I'm still glad I went, TBD on how quickly I'll return. I do have a preference for other spots for Detroit style.
Service: This is a tricky question to answer as it's a very non-traditional setup. You must text in your order and that process was pretty easy, so no complaints. No one was at the counter for the pizza upon pickup but did get there relatively quickly and the kid was friendly, even if trying to upsell the sauces (that I may have tried if I had more cash on hand). Simple to pay and pickup. Zero complaints about the service, but not much to judge on. Service is no issue. Price isn't great, but not horrible. Just under $25 for a cheese after tax, the specialties hover around $30.
Atmosphere: Similar to B+C, Lunita's is only open limited hours during part of the week, operating out of an establishment that is primarily something else. You pick up at the ice cream counter of a Mexican restaurant. It's take-out only. There's not really an atmosphere to speak of. It does almost give the artisan/craft vibe of B+C due to the ordering process and almost speakeasy-like pickup process, even if the pie falls just a little short of that.
In the end, if you're a pizza lover in Orange County, while there are better Detroit style pizzas available, Lunita's is worth trying. The pizza was good enough that I'll return to try another. You certainly won't be upset to have tried a very tasty pizza. If you don't care about establishing the baseline with a cheese pizza and jump right into a specialty, you may even have a better first experience than I did. Good work Lunita's, see you again in the future!

Pop Up Pizza Shop-
If you’re a pizza connoisseur and happen to be in SOUTH Orange County, particularly San Juan Capistrano, then there are few places you know, you can really enjoy quality pizza.
Lunitas is one them. This is a “take out only” place and the menu is predetermined, no messing around trying to pick and choose how you like it.
There’s the menu, you order, simple. But if you like somewhat deep dish, Detroit styled pizza you’ll love this place.
It’s a little unconventional when it comes to ordering, you text your order, get confirmation back and you pick up at the time they provide.
Pop-Up Pizza Shop-
No messing around here just good old fashion pizza in a simple pick-up process.
Look them up on Instagram for more details. They have a cult pizza following already. Get a nice Chianti wine on the way home and your set.
Cheers 🍷

In the back end of a Mexican restaurant, this place is amazing! It’s the best pizza I’ve had in Orange County. $33 per pizza, it’s enough for 2-3 people
Parking: Lots of spots and parking

First visit, I give it 5 stars, only because the pepperoni pizza was excellent. Both cup and sliced pepperoni was used. Very thick and bready with a crispy edge. Yum !
A couple of things to note.
Pickup orders are done by text message only.
All pizzas are one size only, mine was $30, 8 slices.
Pickup is at the takeout section of El Maguey restaurant, but the door to the takeout is signed as “Restrooms” ! Confusing !

Pretty good, high end Detroit style to go. Very filling. 3 pieces and done for me. If you like this style pizza definitely come here. I think the hype died down a bit so don't worry too much about ordering in advance. Just text them.
