Decent selection of meat, seafood and veggies. I prefer the traditional 'communal' hotpot where you are offered better quality meat. This place is good for a quick fix for me just to get a taste of hotpot. There is only a few condiments unlike the typical place where you have over a dozen to fix your own dipping sauce.
$15.99/lb can get pricing if you are a big eater.

Another Malatang in downtown San Mateo. I didn’t compare the price but the environment is better than Zhangliang. I ordered the spicy broth and it tastes pretty good.

More pricier than expected, but generally happy with the food- a lot of items to choose from! Spicy soup is spicy at all tho

The soup is better than Guofu's, and the ingredients are richer and more delicious than Zhang Liang's. No tip is required for internal use. It's a pity that Nanwan hasn't deducted a point yet.

They use a huge amount of MSG in the broths which got me sick. Don't recommend this place if you are sensitive to this poison disguised as a flavor enhancer.

Newly opened Malatang restaurant.

Fresh ingredients and a clean environment. It’s a self-service setup.

Overall, a great experience!

I enjoy eating at this restaurant, however I wish they had more sauces like Zhangliang

Build your own bowl of protein, vegetables, and noodles, and broth of your choice will be added. Lots of food choices but be careful as these bowls are big! Pay by the weight.

Must go place, I do like the concept. Even tho it is self service, the decor makes it feel very elegant. The chicken soup is sooo goood. The cheese fish tofu is so good.

There is a lot of oil, but there is no animal aroma, the vegetables are relatively fresh, and the soup base tastes average. The price is more than 20 dollars per serving, but the quality of the beef is average. I won’t eat it next time.

The ambiance was nice but somewhat loud. They have a lot of choices but I thought the broth was too salty.

Tang Bar was a huge disappointment. The entire dining experience felt more like a cafeteria than a restaurant. You’re forced to wait in line to pick your food, and after paying, you're handed a number. Then comes the worst part—scrambling to find a table. It's incredibly awkward to stand around next to other diners, practically hovering over their meals while you wait for a spot to open up. If you don’t, you’re out of luck unless you come during non-rush hours.

As for the food? Extremely underwhelming. The soup bases tasted artificial, like they were made from a powder mix. Our group of four ordered three different bases, and not one of them had a fresh, natural flavor. The sour and spicy soup was especially bad.

To top it off, there’s basically no service at all. The food is displayed openly, and we saw hair in it, likely from other customers since it's so exposed. Overall, a terrible experience I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

Brand new place with nice indoor / outdoor seating. Create your own noodle dish and they cook it for you. Pretty decent.

Better than expected! Options fresh and good variety. Chicken broth was delicious. Wagyu beef became very dry, but pork and lamb were great. Cost was higher than I would prefer for this kind of meal. Might come back but there are a lot of options in San Mateo! Loved the open atmosphere.
