Town of Dumpling – San Mateo
I’ve lived in San Mateo my whole life and somehow never tried Town of Dumpling until now — no idea how I missed it, but I’m really glad I finally went. The food was seriously delicious. The soup dumplings especially were a standout — super flavorful, juicy, and perfectly done. You could tell everything was made fresh and with care.
Prices were totally fair too, which was a nice surprise given how high quality everything was. It’s just one of those spots that does great food without trying too hard to be “trendy.”
Definitely coming back. Can’t believe I slept on this place for so long.

Authentic Dim sum/Dumpling experience in a hole in the wall joint. The soup dumplings were excellent, as were the pot stickers, beef dumplings, and radish dumplings. The real star of the show was the egg custard buns, they were so good we got a second order for the table, and some frozen ones for cooking at home (THEY SELL FROZEN DUMPLINGS FOR LATER!!). five of us ate until we were stuffed for not very much money at all. You should definitely come here with friends and sit at one of the round tables. Order one of each of a bunch of things and go crazy. The lamb skewers were incredibly tender and tasty. Oh and the scallion pancake was the best I've ever had. There's better spots in SF proper, but this place is a great stand in if you don't want to make the drive.

Definitely that “hole in the wall, unassuming location” type of lucky find. Dining room is nothing to write home about. Stopped in on a whim and ordered dumplings. Had to use their restroom which meant walking through the kitchen whereupon I saw them making the dumplings there. Fresh made on the spot. Can’t go wrong with that! And it did NOT disappoint. Big bang for your buck and the gentlemen greeting and taking your order is very kind. They make their own hot sauce so use at your peril! I mean if you’re a heat wuss like me. BUT it has a great flavor so not faulting them for my spicy aversion. I just know the dosage now!
Oh yeah the dumplings. Good wrappers, a little more toothsome than some but not chewy like doughy. Inside is the good stuff. Great value. I think it was $8.95 for a dozen! Two orders fed us plenty.
Get a little heart here and support this small mom and son dumpling shop.

Worst Dumplings Ever - Don't Waste Your Money
I really regret ordered 100+ dollars food from this place. They just don't know about making dumplings. The dumplings were awful — the filling was a weird mix of bland ingredients that didn’t taste like anything it should be and not fresh at all. It was as if they didn't put correct ingredients together and without any thought for flavor. We could barely finish one bite before throw them away.
To make matters worse, the dishes didn’t even match their names. I ordered “xie ke huang,” supposed to be some really crunchy cake with nice fillings but what I got was completely off, looks like some frozen beans cakes. All the other dishes the texture was terrible. The chili boil fish looks terrible in a huge tin pan, not many pieces floating in a very diluted sauce water. Looks like someone's left over.
We ended up throwing away all of the food. Especially after we got some good ones from another place(yuan bao jiao zi) close by. Honestly, it wasn’t even worth trying to salvage. I don’t know what they were thinking, but they clearly have no clue how to make dumplings or other dishes. I would not recommend this place to anyone. If you're looking for decent dumplings, keep looking because this place is a complete fail.

We had a number of dishes, sharing to taste them all and everything was unbelievable. The chili sauce was amazing, took home a big bowl of it. Everything was very authentic!

Absolutely my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area and the only restaurant I visit repeatedly. Excellent food and great service. Their frozen take home dumplings are always in my freezer for a quick at home dinner. I have taken many different friends there, including a friend who is native Chinese to get her thoughts and she ordered a dish that her mom makes on special occasions and said it was as good as home cooking. It looks like a hole in the wall, but those are the best kinds of restaurants.

This family owned restaurant is a gem. Food is delicious, I highly recommend their handmade pork with Napa cabbage dumplings. They are so good that I buy the frozen ones to enjoy at home. While dining, I can always hear others coming in to purchase them too. Also try the soup dumplings! Authentic Chinese food with great service. The restaurant owner Allen makes you feel right at home.

A typical hole in the wall eatery. Max seating is roughly 30 or more, but pick up orders were ongoing during our visit. Obviously a favorite stop for the locals. I have had better meals but would return to this location again if in the area.
Parking: We also ordered fried rice, chicken chow mein, and pork & corn dumplings.
As far as parking, it's not a large lot and can fill up quickly.
Kid-friendliness: Didn't see any child specific activities or child menus.
Wheelchair accessibility: Don't recall seeing handicap parking or wheelchair ramps. I think wheelchair access is possible but not real convenient. I could be wrong. It was dark when we arrived and parked right in front of the restaurant.

This is a small local chinese restaurant in San Carlos/San Mateo. If you didn't know about it you would over look it but would be missing out.
They specialize in dumplinga which you can see being hand made in the back. They have a wide variety to chose from and also you are able to purchase frozen to take home and cook yourself.
Their shanghai soup dumplings are great. I also got a dumpling soup which you chose which type you want in the soup. Overall everything was great. Fairly priced so it didn't break the bank.
It is a small restaurant and it seemed as if they got more delivery/take out orders. Not an issue because service was fast when we dined in.
