We come here often since we attend many of the programs. It has been declining for some time. One of our favorites was the tuna melt but it was taken off the menu over a year or more ago. It was back on this visit however it was nothing more than two pieces of toast with Tuna, lettuce and tomatoes and cheese. The cheese isn't melted. There are currently only 8 menu items but we're told they are revamping everything. I understand the burger is always good.
The ambience is neat and clean and modern, but nothing to write home about. The prices are comparable to family cafes and so is the food. I liked the chairs. They supported your back, so it was comfortable seating. The service was excellent.
Because of the recent "Terracotta Warriors" exhibition at the Bowers Museum, I took guests to Tangata twice over the past weeks after not having been there for several years. I had been a little worried after seeing a few middling reviews dating from that time period, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, the service, and especially the delightful ambience that I had remembered from past visits. The items I sampled were the manchego salad, the turkey sandwich with fries, the burger, the passion fruit cocktail, and the lemonade with mint. All were good, although I found the turkey sandwich to be a little dry. The service was friendly and efficient, with Michael being a standout on our first visit. Also, the managers graciously turned a blind eye to our guests' lingering well beyond the purported 2 pm closing time on the second visit. If I were to summarize the overall ambience of the restaurant, I would say casual grace, airy decor, and polite inclusivity, with the food tasting even better because of these qualities.
Nice restaurant inside the Bowers Museum. Make reservations to ensure getting a table. Menu wasn't huge but what we ate was very good. Our server was also exceptional. Bottom line, a nice stop with a bar after the museum visit was worth it.
If you are going to the Bowers Museum, definitely make reservations for lunch. It is an open, bright space with very good food, but it is relatively small. The staff are accomodating - we changed our table twice before settling down, and the hostess was very gracious about it. When they were completely full, the manager stepped in to help out and take care of us. It's a good museum restaurant!
We had a very pleasant lunch ! Our server was very attentive and quick to respond to our question . Will definitely go back !
waited 30 min + for the food and felt completely forgotten by our waiter (I believe the name is Michael). In terms of food, it is nothing more than what you can expect from a restaurant inside a museum. But the overall experience is disastrous.
No reasonable gluten free option for children. The hamburger they brought was burned. The service was the WORST. By the time I chased down my bill, way way after finishing the meal very slowly I couldn't bring myself to to give a tip. The waitress was unwelcoming and informed us when we arrived she would be taking care of the table. The table can provide any tip she should get, not the people sitting there waiting overlong for food and service without explanation or apology for the gross delays.
The food arrived promptly and was delicious. It was presented in a visually appealing way and smelled sooooooooo good 🤓!
P.S., have the creme brulee for dessert
I'm a senior citizen that spent decades doing hard labor (construction, truck driver) so,my appearance is weathered and I dress very casually. As I walked up to the restaurant, I was concerned that I wouldn't be taken seriously when I had multiple questions about the menu and because I was by myself.
But there was Excellent customer service!
Both the host and the waiter that took the order (at the bar counter)were very respectful, patient ( I had questions about the menu) and attentive.

A group of 6 women, all of us have been here before. We were in agreement that the food has been much better. The house spring mix was swampy. The Tuna sandwich tasted like chunk light in water with a little mayo flavor. Dreadful. The tomato bisque was good. So was the Manchego salad. The turkey sandwich was dry. I did have a nice cocktail, bees harvest. The Panna cotta was nice with pistachio sprinkled on top and some inedible dried rose petals. Hoping Tangata can step up their game for future visits.

Tangata is connected to the Bowers Museum. It is an outstanding restaurant for visiting the Museum and having a delightful lunch . Great lunch menu served with class and style. Suggest visitors make a reservation on Open table. JaA
The server we had was wonderful, the ice tea was the best I've ever had, but the food was mediocre. We didn't want to try any dessert, so they maybe better. The museum itself was great.
Everything was delicious . However we had a large party (7) and those 2 who had burgers got luke warm burgers and cold French fries. They brought new hot fries but apparently they had just left the burgers sitting while they prepared the other 5 meals.
The whole experience was wonderful. The restaurant was very comfortable and nice. The service was great. Everyone was very welcoming and attentive. The food was very delicious. I would come again.
The ambience is very pleasant whether you eat indoors or outdoors. The food and service are outstanding! We have been a few times and never disappointed.
