I asked for the check with the standard sign (clinching my index and my thumb and moving left to right across my body). The bar tender proceeds to give me a Czech beer. Cool I thought, but I'm in a hurry to go out to eat with my friends.
I return a few days later and ask for the Czech beer, and the bartender says it doesn't exist. I peruse the menu and sure enough it's not there.
If you're going to be a trickster carny, at least back it up with the right beer.

My crew won't be drinking here.

Utterly disappointed and appalled. I had an unpleasant encounter with a male staff member (bald, long beard) here, and though I had previously assumed that he was just another drunken person at the bar, upon reading other reviews, it turns out that he is in fact a staff member at the James Joyce and also a repeat offender.
Do not waste your time and money going to a bar that allows its staff to show partiality and drunkenly mistreat customers for no apparent reason.
Upon reading the other reviews it seems like this bar also regularly mistreats and shows bias against their poc patrons. It is shameful to even call yourself an Irish pub if this is the behavior you exhibit! Do better.

I am a little biased about the "Joyce" because I am friends with the owner, but to be honest, The James Joyce really is a great Irish bar.

We desperately needed an Irish Coffee, and not only did James Joyce deliver, we've already gone back for seconds and plan to make this a frequent stop!Would highly recommend! Friendly bartender, security, and easily one of the best Irish Coffees in Santa Barbara.

The bouncer (bald, bearded) would not let me into the establishment even though he admitted my ID was valid, because he didn’t recognize my friends state Id. Clearly he was on a power trip and didn’t even let me in alone.

This place doesn't have food but it has great karaoke! Awesome place to come to if you're looking for a nice vibe and kind people. The bartenders are excellent and the drinks are excellent as well.

Parking: It's state st, so park on one of many side streets

Took my id and took my id at half a beer. Would not return at half a beer. Obviously in the wrong. Do not go here.
