The smoke and greasy smell inside the restaurant was overwhelming. As soon as you walk in, your clothes and hair absorb the odor, and by the time you leave, you feel like you’ve been standing in a kitchen the whole time. The smell even follow you in the car. The ventilation/sanitation clearly isn’t adequate, which really affects the overall dining experience. If you’re sensitive to smells, this place may be very uncomfortable.

TLDR: The fall of Jang Mo Jip
It is with a heavy heart that I write this, because Jang Mo Jip has been one of my favorite Korean restaurants in the Bay Area for the past five years. We used to dine here from time to time, but it had been about a year since our last visit.
Today marked my last time dining at Jang Mo Jip.
It appears they may have changed chefs, because the taste of the food is no longer what it used to be. Their quality and quantity had always been consistent, but today everything felt off.
To start, the banchan quality has gone downhill. Their homemade kimchi used to be soooo good—perfectly aged and honestly the best in the Bay Area. Today, it tasted incredibly bland, almost like a generic store-bought kimchi—and not even the good kind. Even Jungga kimchi tastes better than this.
The fish cake used to have that chewy texture with a spicy, slightly sweet glaze that paired amazingly with beer. Today, it was soggy, and the sauce had no flavor at all.
We always loved their banchan, especially the mustard greens, but it seems they don’t serve those anymore either.
For entrées, we ordered the gamjatang and the kimchi bokkeum-bap. Needless to say, since the kimchi in the banchan was so bad, the kimchi fried rice also suffered. This dish used to come with generous slices of aged kimchi and big pieces of pork. Today, I didn’t see a single visible piece of kimchi, and the pork was diced into tiny bits. I was very disappointed.
The gamjatang was another letdown. Their soups used to be amazing, each with its own distinct flavor. One of our favorites was the sea bass soup. But today, the pork bone soup came out in a noticeably smaller portion—so small that the meat was fully submerged under the broth. The portion used to be so large it would spill over the bowl.
The meat itself was also incredibly dry! Their meat quality used to be excellent, so it was unfortunate to see both quality and quantity decline this much.
On top of that, the prices have increased. I completely understand restaurants needing to raise prices due to inflation, but not when it comes with a significant drop in quality, quantity, and care.
Lastly, there were fruit flies hovering around our food the entire time. This had never been an issue in all the years we’ve come here. At that point, we honestly lost our appetite. It seems Jang Mo Jip has changed a lot in the past year.
This used to be a hole-in-the-wall gem we recommended to all our friends. But today marked the end of the great Jang Mo Jip for us.
Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend this place due to the decrease in affordability, the decline in food quality, and the lack of cleanliness.

Decent food, ridiculous price for pricing 3 dollars for a bowl of white rice and bad service provided by the hostess.

Great flavors, but everything was very saucy and a bit salty. Great seating for large groups and good service.

Came by for late night eats.
Two of us ordered:
seafood pancake
beef tofu soup
mussel soup
Seafood pancake was on the heavier side.
You can smell detergent soap on the soup bowls, so it can be a bit nauseating if you're sensitive to it. Also quite a bit of flies around the place.
Bathroom requires a key that is in the plaza.
Limited parking out front. Also a lot in the back.
The only place available late at night
The food was really good. Gamjatang was flavorful. The lady there kept rolling her eyes though for some reason. Daughter in law probably 🤣
Kentucky Tondak was fantastic!

This food is gross. It is the first time I've ordered, and it will be the last. My food tasted burned; there was hardly any mest. Thr other kimchi and pork belly fish had no pork belly at all. We spent so much money ordering from DoorDash because I wanted some bibimbap, and what a disappointment.

I didn't feel a lot of friendliness, and maybe they used a lot of dish detergent, but the pot smelled like detergent so much that it was hard to eat. If I go again, I think I'll just pack it up and eat it at home.

I asked noodle, they brought me a soup with pieces of ice inside. I asked to change it. They refused to do so because the recipe required to be ice cold. I tasted it for curiosity and it was disgusting. I ended up sick for 2 days with diarrhea.
